The Descendant can control the Officer/Evil. The ancients called it the Resolving Spirit, also known as Blessed Virtue; in illness divination it also represents medicine. Without it in the hexagram, the Ghost has nothing to restrain it—medicine will not work, prayers will not be answered. It should be generating and vital, not decaying and dead. Day minister and moving lines generating it are auspicious; rushing it is inauspicious.
Next observe the primary image—fear encountering overcome, harm, clash, or punishment.
The primary image is the patient. Divining for a husband: the Officer is primary; for a wife: Wealth is primary; self-divination: World is primary; divination for others: Response is primary. Punishment, clash, overcome, harm mean the patient suffers torment from the condition; hence the dread. If the World line generates/merges, or旁 lines support, death will not occur.
World holding Ghost line: Though the illness may be mild, it is difficult to cure. Illness divination fears Ghost holding World—hard to escape. Even if the overall image indicates mildness, recovery is not easy. If the function line is vital and Descendant is in power, it may be temporarily curable but the root will never be severed.
Body adjacent to Blessed Virtue: Though the condition may be dangerous, it can still be treated. Descendant adjacent to function line: certainly no cause for worry. Even if the illness is fierce, there is salvation; treatment will surely bring recovery.
Function vigorous with support: Fear that extreme hardness leads to breaking. Illness divination dislikes full prosperity—a person in illness must be weak; even the strongest will appear emaciated. Thus prosperous with vitality, encountering generation and support, signifies "extreme hardness breaks"—inauspicious on the day of full prosperity.
Primary void without rescue: Beware death midway. If the primary line is void, it is a major taboo in illness divination. Only if a moving line or day minister clashes/overcomes it can it be considered rescued—clashing fills the void; overcoming makes the void useful. Otherwise, death ensues.
Livelihood pertains to Wife/Wealth: Void means no thought of food or drink. In illness divination, Wife/Wealth is the food supply, Parent is the lifespan. Neither should be absent; stillness is preferred over movement.
Lifespan belongs to Parent: Movement actually shortens Heaven-given years. Parent line moving is a major taboo in illness divination—it overcomes the Blessed Spirit, allowing the Officer/Evil to run rampant: medicine will not work, prayers go unanswered.
Primary line hidden: Certain to mean prolonged prolongation. Function line not appearing: the illness will be hard to recover from. If the line appears, day minister and moving lines can generate and merge it; but if it does not appear, even with generation and support, where can they take effect?
Descendant void or extinct: There must be a lack of nourishing delicacies. Descendant represents both medicine and rich foods. If void, dead, extinct, or not appearing, the illness will lack proper nourishment, dragging on without recovery.
World with Ghost adjacent: One must not follow the Officer into the tomb. World holding Officer Ghost is certainly not auspicious. If the day minister brings the tomb line, this is called "following the Officer into the tomb"—greatly inauspicious.
Body adjacent to Blessed Virtue: How could Parent movement harm it be acceptable? Descendant is the Resolving Spirit; body approaching it is very auspicious. Parent moving to overcome/injure it remains unfavorable.
Ghost transforming to Long Life: The condition is heavy at present. Ghost line moving certainly means severe illness; if transforming into Long Life, it worsens day by day until passing the Emperor's Prosperity day, then lightens. If transforming through decline/illness, it improves day by day.
Function connected to Ghost/Evil: Presently danger of collapse is visible. Function line moving: the body is unwell. Transforming into a Ghost line—called "patient transforms into ghost"—death is certain.
Blessed transforming to Taboo line: Illness increases after slight recovery. Descendant moving to control the Officer Ghost: the illness must diminish. If transforming into a taboo line that injures the function line, the person, failing caution after slight improvement, relapses into heavier illness.
World surrounds Sibling: Appetite diminishes compared to usual. Sibling holding World: appetite certainly decreases; the illness itself results from greedy eating.
Function extinct then generated: Danger yet savable. Function line should not be dead/extinct; a moving line generating it—"generated at extinction"—turns misfortune to fortune.
Primary declining yet assisted: Even severe illness need not be fatal. The function line neither should be over-prosperous nor too weak. With day minister or moving line generating support, even a ten-tenths severe illness will not end in death.
Ghost hidden and void: Prepare funeral clothes early to guard against the unexpected. Officer Ghost absent from the hexagram and hidden in void: the illness cannot be cured—even the finest physician cannot reach its source.
Day minister carrying Ghost: Hurry to pray for protection from mishap. If the day minister brings Ghost generating/merging the World line, observe which kind of spirit is indicated to know how to treat it: with Parent—required talisman rituals; with Descendant—medicine and regulation; with Sibling—curb anger and moderate diet; with Wealth—rest and recuperation; with Officer—prayers needed.
Moving transforming to Six Relatives with clash/overcome:
Day adding Blessed to generate/support: Medicine will bring recovery. Day minister approaching Descendant generating/supporting the function line: recovery through medicinal strength.
Body with both flying and hidden Officers: Illness of the fatal kind. Hexagram body holding Ghost while palace Officer hides under World, or World holding Ghost while palace Officer hides under function line—collectively called "double Officer seizing the body," most unfavorable. Even if the overall image does not indicate death, it is a deeply entrenched illness.
Fate entering both hidden and visible tombs: A person already in the springs. Body following Ghost into tomb, fate following Ghost into tomb, World following Ghost into tomb. Moving out of the hexagram: visible tomb; transforming into one: hidden tomb. Regardless of hidden or visible, neither is auspicious.
Response merging then transforming to Wealth injuring: Do not eat food sent as gifts. Response generating/merging World: someone will come to inquire; with Wealth/Blessed there will certainly be gifts. But if it transforms into Wife/Wealth that punishes/overcomes, or if Response merges World yet punishes/overcomes the primary image, refrain from eating the gifted food.
Ghost moving encountering day break: No danger in facing risk. Officer line moving: disaster has formed. Day minister or moving line rushing it—called "scattering the rush"—although the illness appears fierce, death will not result.
To determine recovery: Examine the Descendant's movement and stillness. Descendant vigorous and moving: recover at the time indicated by its element; without vigor but moving: recover at the generation/prosperity month-day.
To know when life ends: Examine the Officer/Evil's decline and prosperity in detail. These two lines are only general principles; interpretation should be flexible and lively.

Void arriving at World: The mind barely forces itself to seek treatment. World line void: certainly not sincerely seeking a doctor; reluctance makes even good medicine ineffective.
Officer prosperous, Blessed declining: Medicine is light but disease is heavy. Officer qi-less with Descendant prosperous: medicine can overcome illness; Descendant decrepit with Officer instead prosperous: medicine too light for grave illness—no curative success possible.
Response declining, World prosperous: The patient's family is wealthy, the physician poor. World is the patient's family; Response is the physician. Response prosperous with World declining: patient poor while doctor is rich.
Parent should not hold World; how can Ghost/Evil approach the body: Neither hexagram body nor World should have Officer or Parent. Parent holding World: Taoist rituals may remedy; Ghost holding World: pray to spirits for protection, then take medicine and it will work.
Officer transforming to Officer: Changes in the illness—either multiple symptoms, unstable condition, or ineffective medication.
Descendant transforming to Descendant: Medications mixed and impure. Descendant should appear once; excessive repetition or Descendant transforming to Descendant means the doctor lacks precision and medicines are impure—no effect.

Ghost with day minister: Not a chronic illness—newly contracted with sudden onset.
Response with month general: Surely an official physician. Response holding Parent: a monk or Taoist; holding Sibling: an庸 charlatan; holding Wealth: a wealthy doctor or female practitioner; Response with Descendant: a specialist; holding Grand Duke (year): hereditary physician; holding month general: official physician.
Officer hidden under World: Descendant moving means medicine may be wonderful but the root of illness persists. Ghost hidden under World: the illness can never be severed at the root. Though Descendant moving brings temporary effect, when the hidden Ghost prospers in month/day, the illness will relapse.
Ghost seated within decline: When approaching the body, though the illness is light, medicinal power struggles to assist. Hexagram body adjacent to Ghost: the illness clings without release, lingering and difficult to cure.
Parent hidden and dormant: Professionally named a physician yet unfamiliar with pulse principles. With Parent present, Descendant cannot exercise sole authority—not good; yet the hexagram should not lack it entirely; stillness is preferred. Without this line, the practitioner must be a folk healer who dispenses herbs but does not truly understand diagnosis.
Ghost not appearing: Medicine may be administered without recognizing the disease's source. When Officer Ghost appears, the Descendant can control it, day minister can punish it—medication then works. If it does not appear on a line, the condition is concealed; roots are unknown; hasty medication won't help either.
Primary extinct and injured: Useless physicians cannot save. Primary line in decrepitude/death/tomb/extinction, punished/overcome by day minister or moving lines in prosperity: this illness is terminal.
Parent rising with position: Even Bian Que could not succeed. Parent moving: Descendant is controlled—medicines certainly ineffective.

Wood adding Dragon assistance: Better to allow the patient's mood to relax. Azure Dragon is the spirit of joy; approaching a Wood line generating/merging World: the patient will surely relax and then medicines will take effect.
Wealth merging function line, moving in outer position: Vomiting will bring recovery. Wealth in outer trigram moving indicates vomiting. Generating/merging World and function lines: inducing vomiting with medicine yields recovery.
Descendant encountering Fire virtue in Li palace: Moxibustion will cure. Descendant属 Fire in the Li palace: use hot medicinals; in other palaces or outer trigram, use moxa cautery.
Descendant in Kan trigram: Must induce sweating. Officer Ghost with Wood element: First, disperse wind.

Descendant and Officer both moving: Supplement internally and cultivate externally. Both lines moving: medicine does suit the illness—it is spirit interference. Must combine medicine with offerings to ghosts/spirits for recovery.

World and Response comparable, without Blessed Virtue: Must change physicians. World/Response equal strength with no Descendant in the hexagram: current medicine neither harms nor helps—a change of physician is required for recovery.
Wealth and Officer moving with Descendant void: All medication is in vain. Wealth and Officer both moving: the situation is fierce. With Descendant yet void, any medicine taken will not benefit.
