In former days, when the Chen dynasty was about to fall, Emperor Houzhu, Chen Shubao, had his consorts, female musicians, and knights-errant compose poetry together, exchanging verses. Selecting the most ornate, he set them to new music; choosing over a thousand palace maidens to practice singing, they performed in rotating shifts. Among these songs were "Jade Tree, Rear Court Flowers," "Linchun Music," and others, mostly praising the beauty and grace of his concubines. The ruler and his ministers reveled and sang from dusk until dawn, as was their custom. Later, they were destroyed by the Sui dynasty. Hence the saying, "The Jade Tree, Rear Court Flowers are about to wither."

Like Empress Ma of the Han dynasty or Empress Xuanren of the Song dynasty, praised as "Yao and Shun among women." Palace walls for empresses were plastered with pepper, to ward off evil influences—hence the term "pepper chamber."
Day Minister supporting and assisting the child position — the crown prince exercises the sovereign's authority on his behalf. Whether children are born is controlled by the Fifth Offspring line as well. Brothers are ambush troops, and also the spirit that seizes provisions; they should not be vigorous and moving.
Wood rising to support the World — crossing rivers one should ride light boats; Fire strong and generating the Body — establishing camp will surely find an advantageous position. Wood represents boats and oars; if it moves to generate and support the World Body, or if the Water line and Offspring move together, one should cross in boats to seek victory by engagement. Fire is the camp; if strong and moving to support the World, the camp will be established in a position of strategic advantage.
Parent is vigorous and held fast — the commander lacks the virtue of kindness; the Offspring line, having gained ground, shows the general has the talent for deciding victory. If the Parent holds the World and moves, the commander does not cherish the soldiers, and upper and lower are estranged; if it carries Brothers and fierce spirits, one must guard against internal revolt. If the Offspring holds the World Body and is strong and active, the front commander will win victory a thousand li away.
