People are not born wealthy and noble; how can one sit back and enjoy glory and splendor? If driven by fame and profit, who can avoid the toil of the road? Yet the journey of a thousand li is not a matter of a single day or morning. Who knows the fortunes and misfortunes along the way? Among these, only the spirits can provide accurate signs of calamity and blessing.
The Parent line represents luggage. If the Parent line carries punishment or harm, the luggage will be damaged and useless; if it is vigorous, there is much luggage; if it is declining, little luggage; if it is void, there is no luggage. If vigorous but void, though there is some, it is not much; if carrying punishment/harm or being overcome by attack, it is broken or old goods. If the Parent transforms into a Sibling, one shares a bed with others; if the Sibling transforms into the Parent, one shares luggage with others. If borrowing luggage from others, it is unfavorable if the Wealth line holds the World or moves; otherwise it will be difficult to borrow; if combined, one will eventually be able to borrow it.
The Wealth line represents travel funds and possessions. If vigorous, they are sufficient; if declining, meager; if void, none at all. If there is no Wealth line in the hexagram and the Sibling transforms into Wealth, it must be partnership capital or borrowed goods, not one's own.
The World line represents the traveler. If the World line is vigorous and has qi, it is auspicious. If it is declining, dead, or绝, being overcome makes one prone to falling, being injured makes one prone to damage—unable to endure the hardships of travel or the harshness of wind and frost. The Response line represents the place of destination. In the Zhen palace, it is a walled city, market town, or bustling place; in the Kun palace, a desolate open area; in the Gen palace, in the mountains; in the Kan palace, in a water region; others are inferred accordingly. The greatest fear is the Response line being void, which means the destination is lonely, plans are difficult to accomplish, and one will certainly return in disappointment.
The Inner lines (3rd and 4th) represent the journey's experiences. If the inner lines are quiet and not void, the journey will be peaceful with no obstruction; if they move, there will certainly be blockages and delays along the way.
The Year Star (Tai Sui) appearing and moving to clash and overcome the World line means the person will have an unfavorable year abroad. If additionally there are ghost killers or the White Tiger baleful spirit, it is especially inauspicious. If traveling to seek office or position, it is most fitting for the Year Star to give life to and combine with the World body—a sign of accomplishment.
World overcoming Response means I control the other, and wherever one goes there is passage; if additionally the inner lines do not move and ghost killers do not arise, there is no obstruction. Response overcoming World means I cannot fully control matters, and wherever one goes there is blockage; if additionally the moving lines, Day or Month Chen, punish, clash, or harm, it will certainly not be smooth. Whether for public or private affairs, it is unfavorable.
The Eight Pure Hexagrams are hexagrams of six clashes—inner and outer lines do not harmonize or combine, and all plans and hopes are difficult to accomplish; if the six lines are chaotically moving, there is no auspiciousness to speak of. Regardless of direction, it is unfavorable, especially for long-distance travel.
Both inner lines simultaneously void: if traveling alone without companions, it is反而是 auspicious; only worry about World overcoming Response position. If traveling with companions, inner lines being void means the road is blocked and progress is slow. Metal and Water being void means the water route is impassable; Fire and Earth being void means the land route is impassable; if both inner lines are void, one mostly turns back halfway.
The World line moving means the departure date is set. If both World and Response move, one should travel quickly; if other lines move, one should travel slowly. If the World moves and transforms into a Ghost line, disaster will be encountered after departure. If the Ghost holds the World, it shows hesitation and timidity—wanting to go but not going, certainly with doubts; if declining, it is difficult to arise; if vigorous, mostly one cannot go; if moving, there may be no companion and thus one does not go. If it is also on the Response line, things at the destination will be unfavorable. If the Ghost transforms into Descendant, though there are disasters, they are not worth worrying about.
The World line quiet and encountering hidden clashes from Day or moving lines means someone else is entreating the person to travel, not for personal affairs. To know who entreats one, determine by the line that clashes—if it is the Parent line, it is an elder, and so forth. If the World moves but is combined by Day or moving lines, one is about to travel but is detained by affairs and cannot depart. To know what affairs detain one, determine by the combining line—if it is a Ghost line, it is government affairs; if Gou Chen moves and combines, it is land or field matters. If on the inner lines, one is mostly obstructed by companions.
If the World encounters void, it is most favorable for people of the nine schools and arts to travel. If the World is void, one cannot go; forcing oneself to go will end in returning in disappointment. If the person himself divines about travel, the greatest taboo is World being void—even if勉强 traveling, one will be trapped in another land, toiling in vain. But if people of the nine schools, arts, or government service divine, it turns out to be an auspicious sign—meaning catching money with empty hands or gaining wealth in bustling places. Yet it cannot be accumulated; encountering clash is marvelous.
Fire and Earth lines moving means the land route is suitable; Water and Wood lines moving means the water route is suitable. If Fire and Earth are on the Wealth and Descendant lines, land travel is appropriate; if Ghost killers are on Water and Earth, boating is not favorable. If Earth and Fire transform into void, beware of falls; if Water and Earth transform into void, beware of drowning. One should be flexible and adaptable.
Ghost places and Tomb directions—how can one tread upon them; Wealth directions and Parent directions—these are fitting to ascend. Ghost places: for example, if the World belongs to Metal, the Fire direction to the south is [the ghost place]; Tomb directions: for example, if the World belongs to Fire, the northwest Xu Earth direction. If one goes to these directions, there will certainly be calamity. Seeking wealth and profit, one should travel to the Wealth direction—as when World belongs to Earth, the Water direction to the north is Wealth. Seeking office or audience with nobility, one should travel to the Parent direction—as when World belongs to Water, the Metal direction to the west is Parent. Wherever ghost killers are located, one should avoid; wherever Wealth and Descendant are located, one should go.
Official Ghost on the Xuan Wu line with punishment/overcoming indicates bandit alarms and fright. In all travel divination, the greatest fear is the Ghost line appearing. If declining and quiet, it is auspicious; it especially must not move, for moving brings certain disaster. On Qing Long: trouble arises from wine and sex; on Zhu Que: trouble from words and speech; on Teng She: much fright; on Bai Hu: much illness; on Xuan Wu: loss and theft. Gou Chen with Water moving means much wind and rain along the way. Ghost holding or overcoming World is most taboo; vigorous is also taboo; if declining and controlled so it does not harm the World body, there is ultimately no great disaster—only companions will have calamity. If World is void and not overcome, it also indicates disaster for companions.
Sibling with White Tiger killer moving indicates perils of wind and waves. Sibling with White Tiger moving, or Ghost moving in a Wood line, or Wood transforming into Ghost to punish/clash, or Ghost in Xun palace moving to overcome—all indicate perils of wind and waves. On the 3rd or 4th lines: one encounters them upon leaving the door; on the inner lines: encountered mid-journey; on the 5th line: the whole road is uneasy; on the top line or Response: one only sees them at the destination. If other lines move but do not harm the World body, it is only danger. If vigorous and clashing/overcoming, beware of drowning. Ghost transforming into Sibling or Sibling into Ghost: not only wind and wave alarms on the way, but also the calamity of thieves.
Wealth line moving to punish and overcome the World line: disaster arises from money—do not be greedy. If World and Wealth combine, and the Wealth line transforms into a Ghost that punishes/overcomes, calamity comes from lust—do not be infatuated.
Parent line encountering punishment/overcoming indicates wind and rain drenching—especially taboo when traveling by boat. Parent is the spirit of toil and hardship; moving means exhausting travel without peace or benefit. Punishing/overcoming the World means suffering from wind and rain obstruction. Parent also represents boats: overcoming the World means the boat does not move smoothly; if additionally with White Tiger on Wood lines or transforming into Official Ghost, there is certainly danger of wind and waves. If the Descendant moves to rescue, it can turn misfortune into fortune.
Descendant holding the World is auspicious without exception, indicating going auspiciously and turning well. Moving means meeting good companions—on 3rd/4th lines, meeting upon leaving the door; on 5th line, meeting mid-journey; on 6th line, receiving good support at the destination. If traveling to visit nobles, Descendant moving is unfavorable, called "harming the officer"—反面不利.
Gen palace Ghost sitting on the Yin line: beware of tigers and wolves. Official in Zhen or Gen palace meeting Yin line moving indicates danger from tigers and wolves. If without qi but controlled, or not harming World, or World in avoidance void, one ultimately will not lose life—only suffer empty fright.
Zhen hexagram Sibling meeting Teng She killer: beware of swindlers and tricksters. Sibling governs robbing wealth; if adding Teng She moving, there must be hooligans robbing and kidnapping property. In Zhen palace, the hooligans are in the market town; in Kun palace, among villagers; if on Response, they are the host at the destination; on 5th line, cheated mid-journey. Transforming into Official Ghost, they are thieves. Without qi, beware of pickpockets.
Ghost moving on inner lines: companions are discordant, or one among the companions falls ill. If Sibling is void and not overcome, then one's own disasters are indicated, not matters among companions.
Sibling holding the World inevitably wastes money. On Snake/Zhu Que: fear of gambling losses; Qing Long/Xuan Wu: wasting money on wine and women; otherwise, travel expenses will be excessive. If traveling for profit, it is most unfavorable. If declining and quiet, it is still tolerable; if vigorous and moving, one empties travel funds in vain, toiling for nothing, getting nothing.
If the hexagram has no Official Ghost or baleful spirit, only then can one get what one wishes. Ghost on the 1st line: feet will hurt; 2nd line: bodily disaster; 3rd line: companion illness; 4th line: after departure, the family has legal troubles; 5th line: roads are blocked; 6th line: at the destination plans are unfavorable. Only when all six lines have no Ghost is it greatly auspicious.
If the six lines show no Descendant fortune spirit, how can one be satisfied? Descendant is fortune-virtue and also the relief spirit. If it does not appear or falls void, then ghost killers hold full power, and in any disaster there is no rescue. Thus the "Sea Bottom Eye" says: if the hexagram has no Descendant, there is no joy.
The subject line (用神) moving and encountering void: returning halfway. If divining on behalf of another, one must see who is traveling—for monks, Taoists, sons, or nephews, the Descendant line serves as the subject line; others according to this pattern. If the subject is void and moving, the person returns halfway; that is also true for moving and transforming into a retreating spirit; moving and transforming into void indicates ill fortune after departure. Retreating spirits like Mao transforming into Yin, You transforming into Shen, and such.
Wealth qi vigorous and approaching the Month Star: returning fully loaded. If travels obtain Wealth line vigorous, giving life to and combining with the World, not repelling void, not suffering punishment/overcoming, then in future days there will surely be business; if additionally the Month Star gives life and support, one is certain to return home fully loaded.
But if one can approach auspiciousness and avoid misfortune, why worry about climbing heights and crossing dangerous places!
The core logic of travel divination is to establish a three-part judgment framework with the World line as the traveler, the Response line as the destination, and the inner lines as the journey process—forming a "person-road-place" trinity. At the same time, the Parent line represents luggage and the Wealth line represents travel funds, forming a complete analysis of travel resource allocation. The entire system emphasizes "aligning with circumstances"—World overcoming Response means to go; Response overcoming World means to stop; where Wealth and Descendant are located, go there; where ghost killers reside, avoid them.
From the perspective of modern decision science, this divination system is essentially a risk assessment checklist: Is luggage sufficient (Parent line)? Is funding in place (Wealth line)? Is the destination favorable (Response line)? Is the journey smooth (inner lines)? Are companions reliable (Sibling and inner lines)? Are there accident risks (Ghost line, White Tiger)? This is highly consistent with the "pre-trip inspection checklist" logic that modern people use before business trips or vacations. The ancients transformed uncertain factors into hexagram symbols—essentially reducing decision blind spots in conditions of information scarcity through systemic thinking.

The World line represents subjective will, the Response line the external environment, the inner lines transitional space—the relationships among these three echo Heidegger's "Being-in-the-world": humans are forever on a journey from one place to another, and what divination provides is merely a psychological anchor seeking a modicum of certainty amid uncertainty.
Driven by fame and profit, people forget the joy of their native place; with no news from home, they rely entirely on the deductions of the Zhou Yi hexagrams.
To determine the return date, one must seek the subject line (用神). For officials and functionaries, look at the Official line; for monks, Taoists, and the young, the Descendant line; for wives, concubines, and servants, the Wealth line; for brothers and friends, the Sibling line; for elders and seniors, the Parent line. For those not among the six relatives, look at the Response line.
The subject line moving: the traveler has already set out. Look at which line to know where the person is: on the 1st or 2nd line, just departed; on the 3rd or 4th line, about to arrive at the gate; on the 5th line, mid-journey; on the 6th line, still at the starting point, return date still far off. The subject line quiet, and without the Day or moving lines clashing it: the person is settled in a foreign place, with no thoughts of return.
Overcoming speeds up; giving life delays. If the Day Star overcomes the World, the person arrives quickly; gives life to and combines with the World, the person returns late. The greatest fear is the World line overcoming the subject line—this indicates the person cannot yet return.
The 3rd line is the gate, the 4th line the door. The subject line on these and moving: the return journey is near. If additionally the Response or moving lines overcome or give life to the World, and the subject line is not controlled, the person arrives home imminently—one can wait standing.
Moving and transforming into a retreating spirit: the person has come but turns back again. Thus Yin moving to Mao, Si moving to Wu, and so forth, are called advancing spirits; You moving to Shen, Zi moving to Hai, are called retreating spirits. If the subject line transforms into an advancing spirit, the traveler hurries back and can be expected any day; if into a retreating spirit, the traveler comes but then turns back again; void-movement is the same. Look at which line to know where the person turns back. To determine how many li traveled, use the generative numbers—one-six water number, two-seven fire number, three-eight wood number, four-nine metal number, five-ten earth number; Yang lines use the heavenly numbers, Yin lines the earthly numbers; vigorous doubles, dead-绝 halves.
Quiet but giving life to the World position: the body has not moved but the heart longs for home. If all six lines are quiet, the person has certainly not returned. But if the Response gives life to or combines with the World, or World and Response are harmonious, and the subject line gives life to and combines with the World, the body has not yet moved but the intention to return is present. Just look for the month-day when it is clashed to determine the departure time; if having qi, return within ten days; having qi indicates rapid arrival, lacking qi indicates delay. If encountering hidden clash, it is seeing things and longing for home, just forming the intention to return home. If the Day Star clashes but the Month or moving lines overcome, even with guest circumstances, it is difficult to depart.
If encountering combination: at departure time, dusty affairs detain the person. The subject line moving is originally a return omen, but if moving lines or Day combine it, this is called "being combined/hitched"—the person wants to return home, but events bind and prevent return. Combined by the Parent line: detained by elders or obstructed by documents; by the Wealth line: infatuated by a woman or detained by money matters; by the Sibling line: blocked by friends or companions'-mouth quarrels; by the Descendant line: blocked by children, livestock, monks, or Taoists; by the Official Ghost line—with auspiciousness, detained by nobility, with inauspiciousness, detained by fire, theft, officials, or disasters.
World overcomes Response and both move: the person turns toward another place. World moving means return intention is urgent, Response moving means the body has already set out. If moving World overcomes moving Response, the traveler comes but goes elsewhere—not home. The subject line moving to give life to and combine with the Response line: same judgment.
Response comparing with World and both void: difficult to return to the old home. Response is the guest-land, World the hometown. Response giving life to or combining with World: the traveler longs for home, and return can be hoped for. World and Response comparing harmoniously is originally not a return omen; only when the subject line moves to overcome and combine with the World can one return. The greatest fear is the Response line being void—even if coming, it is delayed; if both are void with the World, then want-to-come-but-not-coming, no reliability, difficult to expect return. But if Response is not void and World alone is void, it indicates the traveler has already left that place—on the contrary, return is hastened. If the subject line additionally moves, one can wait standing.
Long-distance travel fears most the subject line being harmed, and especially entering the tomb. For a traveler at a distance, obtaining a subject line that appears, does not face void, is not harmed or overcome, and the hexagram has Wealth and Descendant, indicates the person prospers abroad, and even late return is no harm. Being in death/tomb/绝 places, or Day/Month moving transformations punishing or overcoming—all indicate ill fortune. If the subject line for no reason voids itself, transforms into death/tomb/void/绝, or a jealous line with vigor and killers moves, or the hexagram lacks a subject line and Response is also void—all should be judged inauspicious.
Near travels harm not the hidden subject—countering to benefit from clash. For someone traveling nearby within the household, the subject line hidden indicates something has kept them—not returning. If Day or moving lines clash it, then return comes; or without Day or moving lines clashing, at the clashing day-hour arrival occurs. The subject line quiet follows this judgment as well.
If hidden in a void place, one must examine the six combinations in the hexagram. If the subject line is void, one must break/clash the flying spirit covering the hidden to reveal the hidden as the subject; otherwise it is ultimately held down. Only then一the hidden under a void line being六合 combined by moving Day line—can it emerge for use. Someone can be expected to return. Six clash is especially marvelous. Determining return date with the clashing/combining month-day. If the hidden spirit itself encounters void, fear the person is a ghost in a foreign land—there will be no day of return.
If hidden under the Official: examine the six spirits on the flying line. The subject hidden under the Official Ghost line: bound by baleful affairs. On Qing Long: fallen ill from wine and lust, not returning; on Zhu Que: not returning due to lawsuits and verbal disputes; on Gou Chen: fall injuries; on Teng She: implicated fears; on Bai Hu: bedridden, unable to rise; on Xuan Wu: robbed and lost money, not returning. Whenever encountering a Earth ghost as illness and Fire ghost as litigation, regardless of the six spirits. If the hexagram has no Official Ghost, judge according to the above.
Sibling concealing and covering: because of quarrels, the person does not return. The subject hidden beneath the Sibling line: there must be right-wrong, mouth-tongue, fighting matters preventing return. Adding Zhu Que it is gambling; transforming into Official Ghost, loss of money; on Bai Hu, wind and wave troubles.
Descendant holding fast: because of pleasure-wine the person forgets to return. The subject hidden beneath the Descendant line: must be for amusement, drinking, hunting, theater, horse-riding, not returning; otherwise for livestock matters, children's matters, or obstruction by monks.
Parent is the blockade of documents. The subject hidden below the Parent line: necessarily blocked by documents, or detained by craft; otherwise detained by elders. If the hexagram has no Parent or it falls void, there is surely no travel permit; if moving and transforming into void, the permit has been lost; Parent transforming into Parent, two people sharing one permit.
Wealth is the entanglement of buying and selling. The subject hidden below the Wealth line: certainly because of business ventures, not returning. If Wealth is void or robbed by Siblings, the loss comes mostly from losing capital; if Wealth has qi or receives life/support, there must be profit—so the person forgets home. If on Qing Long or Xuan Wu, the person is addicted to sensual pleasures and does not return.
Subject hidden beneath Response-Wealth: body is attached to another home. The subject hidden beneath Wealth on the Response line: certainly the person has married into another family and does not think of returning. Wealth moving to give life to and combine with World: the person brings a wife home. Wealth neither giving life to nor combining with the hidden: the person is managing someone else's money or relying on another family—not a spouse.
Subject thrown into the Wealth storage: the name stays in a rich household. The subject hidden beneath the Wealth Tomb line: the person indeed manages finances for a wealthy family. If the hidden is decaying/绝-qi-less, then supporting by others for a living. If the subject appears in the Wealth line and moves, in future loaded with full wealth comes home; with Qing Long or Month-Star additionally, still more pleasing.
5th line with Ghost: all because the road is impassable. Ghost moving on the 5th line: the route is blocked and cannot pass, hence not returning. Same if jealous killer moves at the 5th; 5th line void also giving signs.
A hexagram without Wealth: only for lack of travel funds. In the entire hexagram sun-moving transformations, if the Moon or Days have no Wealth without reason: because of lacking路费 the person does not return; wealth having钱 then closing-empty having illness are the same. If persons for profit, certainly failing will inevitably follow.
Tomb held, tomb moving: surely lying sick groaning. If the subject enters the tomb, transforms into tomb, holds a Ghost-Tomb, or with a Ghost-Tomb line moving in the hexagram, or the subject hidden under a Ghost-Tomb line: all indicate the person生病-lying in another lodging thus not returned. Hidden beneath the Official Official-巫-in-connection-indicating the same. Adding a Zhu Que or transforming into documents: one is in prison, не sick.
World combined, World clashed: must send someone to seek. With the subject quiet and obtaining the World moving to increase或-start is lift-off: must personally go searching for return. Hidden获得 raising-by-the-World; entombment破-Tomb day—same through like efforts.
Adding Xuan Wu as combination-calm-taken: infatuated within beauty and loses home thoughts. In a six-combination hexagram with Xuan Wu-Wealth moving; or subject-on-玄武 combining-Wealth and同-being-hitched; or subject hiding under Xuan Wu-Wealth; or in three-combines Wealth-square —where-then both moving into the pattern: in outs for the person loves and becomes mistresses female-attention and gives no thought to the hometown =? An even adding the break-shook sun-clashes-break combination-line later promotes a return date. If the person-owner against --opbs have not normal thought but become robbers and-thugs: otherwise being falsely implicated, will-亡 because。
Hexagrams getting the Roaming-Soul: drifting among places within no anchor.
