In this series of articles, you will not find any grand cultural backdrop, no abstract explanations like "unity of heaven and man," and no ancient anecdotes. The reason is simple: only the essentials, the unadulterated essentials. Foundational knowledge can tolerate zero impurities. Consider this: if your foundation is shaky, with truth and falsehood muddled together, then by the time you reach the advanced techniques later on, you will inevitably go astray — even starting to doubt the accuracy of the art of destiny analysis, and in more extreme cases, doubting life itself.
Alright, let's formally begin.
What is BaZi (Eight Characters)? BaZi is simple — it's just eight characters.
Which eight characters? When you convert the modern Gregorian calendar date into the ancient Chinese Sexagenary cycle (Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches) notation, the resulting eight characters are the BaZi.
Now, how does one perform this conversion?
That's a long story. In the era before the internet was widespread, skilled destiny analysts had to perform this conversion entirely in their heads. But they didn't do it by hardcore mental arithmetic — rather, by memorizing the "Yin Pan Zi" (Silver Plate) system to calculate the BaZi. The Silver Plate, in essence, is a set of formulas and rules used for mental calculation of the perpetual calendar. Never underestimate the Silver Plate — practitioners of the Blind School tradition, both historically and today, earn their living this way, and it's the most basic skill required for entry. If one failed to memorize it, one was simply shown the door. A Blind School master once told me that due to his youthful playfulness, it took him a grueling three months to get it down, and he nearly missed out on his livelihood entirely.
Another question: what if you just can't memorize it? If you're blind, there's no way around it. If you're not blind — easy: buy a perpetual calendar and look it up character by character. Of course, if you carry a perpetual calendar around, it would be rather embarrassing. Going out to do fortune readings with a perpetual calendar and flipping through it every time is truly a disgrace to the patriarchs. The bowl of rice given by the patriarchs must be held up with both hands!
Now, in the era of the internet, how should one calculate the BaZi? Do you have to memorize the Silver Plate, or buy a perpetual calendar? None of that is needed. So what do you use? Baidu! Type "八字排盘" (BaZi chart calculation) into the Baidu search box, and dozens of pages will appear — just use any of them.
But a word of caution: if you were born between 11 PM and 1 AM, pay special attention. Many online BaZi calculations are inaccurate because the day pillar differs between the early and late Zi hours. Some web pages do not switch the day pillar for charts it generates during these times (this issue will be addressed later).
Alright, at this point, you should be able to generate your own BaZi online.
For example, at the current moment — 21:30 on August 22, 2017 (Gregorian calendar) — the conversion to the Sexagenary cycle notation is as follows:

Now, after obtaining the BaZi, how should one interpret it? For instance, people say things like: "I'm a Fire destiny — I'm always losing my temper!" Or "I'm a Water destiny — people say I'm licentious, flowing like water." Or "I'm a Metal destiny — does that mean I'm the rich tycoon type?" In reality, these are just overthinking it. Fortune-telling isn't that simplistic.
How do you determine what your destiny element is?
This question needs to be examined from two perspectives:
First, Nayan (harmonic resonance) perspective (elaborated later): Look at the year pillar. For example, Dingyou (2017) corresponds to the Nayan of "Shan Xia Huo." Fire of the Mountain (Fire underneath a mountain), so the above chart belongs to the Fire-by-Nayan destiny — also just called a Fire destiny. 🔥
Second, Day-Pillar Five-Element perspective: In BaZi, the Day is regarded as central; the Day pillar represents the subject herself. The day pillar in the chart above is Xinsi, in which Xin (辛) corresponds to the Five-Phase element of Metal — therefore a Metal destiny.
Having gone through this, confirming one's destiny element should be pretty straightforward by now.
Once you know what your destiny element is, what comes next? Simple — start from the beginning. Where is the beginning? That's where the theory of Yin-Yang enters the picture. Exactly how the Yin-Yang fits in? We'll take that up in the next part.
At its essence, BaZi is a time-recording system. It uses the symbolic framework of Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches to precisely convert the year, month, and day (along with the hour) of a person's birth into eight characters, serving as a logical starting point for analyzing individual temperament and life trajectory.
