For example: a Geng Metal Day Master born in the Xu month with Wu Earth exposed in the Heavenly Stem is a Miscellaneous Qi Indirect Seal Pattern; a Xin Metal Day Master born in the Chen month with Wu Earth exposed in the Heavenly Stem is a Miscellaneous Qi Direct Seal Pattern; a B Wood Day Master born in the Chen month with Gui Water exposed in the Heavenly Stem is a Miscellaneous Qi Indirect Seal Pattern.
The Seal Pattern takes the Seal star as its foundation. Although "Seven Killings, Hurting Officer, Vulture, and Blade" are listed as the Four Ferocious Gods, the Indirect Seal in the Indirect Seal Pattern is not the Vulture God, therefore it is not ferocious, nor does it seize the Eating God. The likes and dislikes of the Direct Seal and Indirect Seal are largely the same, so this chapter discusses them together. The Seal star represents vital energy, and fears most penalties, clashes, death, and extinction. The Seal star is that which nourishes and sustains the Day Master—the more prosperous it is, the better 🌱. It is favorable when accompanied by auspicious gods such as the Heavenly Nobleman or Heavenly and Monthly Virtues; it is unfavorable when encountering baleful stars such as the White Tiger, Wandering Spirit, Robbery (Bane) Star, etc.
The Seal is that which generates me, serving as a reserve of strength; the Eating God and Hurting Officer are that which I generate, reflecting talent and output. One is input, the other is output. It is only through output that a person's value—and their ability to transform society (what we might call subjective initiative)—becomes manifest. In this context, both the Eating God and Hurting Officer are favorable spirits. One is conventional and steady, the other an unconventional genius—different paths, but with the same destination. What is hoped for is the accomplished achievement of the person, whether it fails or not.
The Direct Officer is that which restrains the Day Master, representing difficulties and obstacles. Self-cultivation and discipline are never easy. With the Direct Seal in place, one is, of course, meant to venture out and accomplish things. Overcoming challenges, fortified by the Seal's empowerment, one achieves results through personal effort. An official appointed with a letter of appointment must deliver results to be worthy of the people and the nation's expectations. A graduate, armed with a diploma and degree certificate, knocks on the door of an employer and shines in their position. These are the positive roles of the Seal star.
Only the Direct Seal fears the Direct Wealth, known as the Wealth that Corrupts the Seal. The Seal is the bottom line—the basic principles of conduct. Direct Wealth is the Seven Killings of the Direct Seal. If the Direct Seal pattern is compounded by Direct Wealth, the Seal star becomes restricted, and the Seal pattern fails. Loss comes through money; harm is done because of money. Consider corruption, bribery; or seeing others launch profitable ventures while being unable to resist the temptation, recklessly abandoning one's position and resigning hastily—eventually ending up with empty hands, overreaching one's means.
The Seal is what generates me, and thus most flourishes in prosperity and vitality. If it falls into a place of death or extinction, it cannot function significantly. The Seal's role is greatly diminished, and the pattern becomes average at best. This "death or extinction," in this instance, mainly refers to the Seal star in Miscellaneous Qi months—for example, Ding Fire exposed in the Xu month, or Yi Wood exposed in the Wei month.
For example, if A Wood Day Master is born in Hai month and encounters Mao or Wei, the Seal star turns into a Yangblade Pattern. If the chart lacks a Direct Officer to control the Blade, or a Hurting Officer to transform it, the caliber of the pattern drops significantly.
When the Direct Seal is strong and the Day Master is robust, this is least favorable: the Seven Killings attacking the body is the hardest to resist. If the Day Master is already strong, why would it need the Seal's strength? At this point, the Day Master relies on its own vigorous constitution. Without the Seal's nurturing, the Seal can no longer transform the killings, and the Seven Killings, unchecked, directly assail the body. The Indirect Seal, however, favors a strong Day Master—for the Indirect Seal is like a stepmother: if the subject is robust and capable, the stepmother cannot dominate the Day Master.
Also, the Seal Pattern is not fond of Seven Killings, but neither does it fear them. When connected to killings, simply transform them—as long as the Day Master is not too strong.
The essence of the Seal Pattern is that which generates me becomes my own resource. The Seal represents nurturing, protection, education, authority, support from elders, backing, and so on. The key to the Seal Pattern's success or failure lies in whether the Seal star can effectively nourish the Day Master, transform pressure (kill → seal), and maintain its status as the basis of the cosmic structure. The “fondness” for Eating God and Hurting Officer—that is, “output”—comes from needing both input and throughput; that's how phenomena become visible. The fondness for Direct Officer is due to pressure and restraint that can, in turn, be translated into motive force for growth through the Seal. The dread of Direct Wealth is because that star directly attacks and destroys the Direct Seal—fundamentally destroying the root of the pattern's structure. The dread of death/extinction, mutation, or a robust frame all further eviscerate that structure.
