Chapter 46 of 50
基础知识
The definition of Gold Spirit is relatively straightforward: only for individuals born on a Jia (甲) Day, when the Hour Pillar falls on one of the three时辰 — Gui You (癸酉), Ji Si (己巳), or Yi Chou (乙丑) — is the Gold Spirit pattern established.
The Gold Spirit most favors 🔥 Fire to restrain it, especially when the Month Branch forms a Fire bureau. For example, if the Month Branch is Si (巳) or Wu (午), or if the Earthly Branches include a San He Fire combination of Yin-Wu-Xu (寅午戌). Fire tempers the Gold Spirit, enabling it to be forged into a vessel, thereby conferring nobility. If there is no Fire in the Month Branch, the Gold Spirit pattern is not considered established.
Therefore, for anyone with a Jia Day Master whose Hour Pillar is one of the three aforementioned时辰, the first step is to check whether the Month Branch is Si (巳) or Wu (午), or whether the Earthly Branches contain a Fire bureau, such as the San He combination of Yin-Wu-Xu (寅午戌); if at least two other branches are Fire-related, it may also be loosely discussed as a Gold Spirit pattern.
Day Noble refers to the Day Master sitting directly on the Tian Yi Nobleman (Heavenly Virtue Nobleman). This pattern only applies to four days: Ding You (丁酉), Ding Hai (丁亥), Gui Si (癸巳), and Gui Mao (癸卯).
Individuals with this pattern are typically pure in character, possess benevolence and virtue, and have a dignified appearance. They do not bully others with arrogance nor display haughty disdain. With the Tian Yi Nobleman sitting in the Day Branch, it is as if a noble guardian accompanies them wherever they go. Thus, they inherently possess an advantage of nobility.
Day Noble most favors the San He (Three Harmony), Liu He (Six Harmony), and Zhai Mu He (Residence-Tomb combinations) — the reasoning being that these combinations can "lock in" the noble energy, preventing it from dissipating. It also greatly favors the auspicious stars of Wealth, Officer, Seal, and Eating God, which can further elevate the pattern's level.
What it most fears are Kong Wang (Void), Xing Hai (Punishment and Harm). The nobleman is like a treasure — any slight flaw causes a sharp decline in value. The dramatic fall from nobleman to commoner manifests as a discontinuity in the pattern and great turbulence in life, potentially even worse than an ordinary chart.
It also fears Kui Gang. Kui Gang is a place where the nobleman does not visit; when encountering one another, they clash and refuse to submit, significantly decreasing the pattern's level.
The Day Virtue pattern applies only to five days: Jia Yin (甲寅), Bing Chen (丙辰), Wu Chen (戊辰), Geng Chen (庚辰), and Ren Xu (壬戌). Yin (寅) marks the beginning of the Three Yang; Chen (辰) and Xu (戌) belong to Kui Gang territory. These day pillars are distinctly different from others, hence the name "Day Virtue."
The requirement for establishing the Day Virtue pattern is Bing Ta (并踏, "concurrent stepping") — meaning that in addition to the Day Master, at least one of the other three pillars must also belong to one of these five days. Only then is the pattern established; otherwise, it is analyzed under other patterns.
Those who successfully establish the Day Virtue pattern tend to be kind-faced and amiable, devoid of malice, and compassionate toward others. Such people are rescued from misfortune, relieved from calamity, and enjoy tremendous blessings. 🌱
The Kui Gang pattern applies to four days: Geng Chen (庚辰), Ren Chen (壬辰), Wu Xu (戊戌), and Geng Xu (庚戌). Chen (辰) is Tian Gang (Heavenly Gang), and Xu (戌) is He Kui (River Kui) — both are places where Yin and Yang reach extinction, hence the name.
The establishment requirement is likewise Bing Ta (并踏) — in addition to the Day Master, at least one of the other three pillars must also belong to one of these four days for the pattern to be established; otherwise, it is analyzed under other patterns.
People with the Kui Gang pattern are intelligent by nature, their writing is inspired and forceful, they are decisive in action, and when in power, they dare to act boldly and execute judgment ruthlessly. ⚔️
Kui Gang favors strong self (Body Strong) luck. Because Kui Gang is a place where noblemen do not arrive, one must rely on one's own strength. Thus, a strong Body is best — able to withstand blows while also enjoying blessings. What it fears most is Officer (Guan) luck, which easily invites disaster.
| External Pattern | Establishment Conditions | Favorable | Unfavorable | Key Characteristics |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gold Spirit | Jia Day Master, Hour Pillar is Gui You, Ji Si, or Yi Chou | Month Branch connects to Fire bureau, or Fire is strong in branches | No Fire in Month Branch → pattern not established | Fire forges into vessel, confers nobility |
| Day Noble | Day Pillar is Ding You, Ding Hai, Gui Si, or Gui Mao | San He, Liu He, Zhai Mu He; Wealth, Officer, Seal, Eating God | Kong Wang, Xing Hai, Kui Gang | Nobleman accompanies; virtuous, dignified, not arrogant |
| Day Virtue | Day Pillar is Jia Yin, Bing Chen, Wu Chen, Geng Chen, or Ren Xu, with another Day Virtue day appearing in Year, Month, or Hour | Bing Ta establishment; great blessings | Original text lists no explicit taboos | Kind-faced, rescued from misfortune, relieved from calamity |
| Kui Gang | Day Pillar is Geng Chen, Ren Chen, Wu Xu, or Geng Xu, with another Kui Gang day appearing in Year, Month, or Hour | Strong Body luck | Officer luck | Intelligent, decisive, inspired writing, holds power and executes |
The four patterns share a common principle: When something is extreme (biased), it can only be useful if properly counterbalanced. Gold Spirit is biased toward Metal and needs Fire restraint; Day Noble is biased toward nobility and needs combination and protection; Day Virtue is biased toward Yang virtue and needs repetition; Kui Gang is biased toward extreme terrain and needs a strong Body. This embodies the traditional BaZi wisdom of "guiding according to circumstances" and "excess is as harmful as deficiency."
From a modern perspective, these external patterns resemble the ancients' categorical observations of personality archetypes and destiny tendencies. They can inspire self-awareness but cannot replace real-life choices and efforts. What truly matters is converting these ancient insights into actionable life strategies rather than falling into fatalism.
