Chapter 36 of 50
基础知识
The Food God pattern is determined with the Month Command as the core, as follows:
| Day Master Heavenly Stem | Month Command | Food God |
|---|---|---|
| Jia Wood | Si Month | Bing Fire 🔥 |
| Yi Wood | Wu Month | Ding Fire 🔥 |
| Wu Earth | Shen Month | Geng Metal |
| Ji Earth | You Month | Xin Metal |
| Geng Metal | Hai Month | Ren Water 🌊 |
| Xin Metal | Zi Month | Gui Water 🌊 |
Special Treatment for the Four Seasonal Months (Chen, Xu, Chou, Wei): If the Food God emerges from a Miscellaneous Qi month, it cannot be hastily classified as a Miscellaneous Qi Food God pattern. The Food God must be "pure"—this is determined by the Food God's characteristics and functions, which tolerate no mixture whatsoever.
"Hidden invitation" is achieved through "combining":
Through the method of "combining," the Day Master obtains the blessings of Officer and Resource by virtue of the Food God. Although the Food God does not directly and openly manifest Officer or Resource, it can secretly invite Officer and Resource, reaping their practical benefits. From this perspective, the Food God must be pure—if impure, the "combining" cannot summon Officer and Resource. This is like sincerely inviting an honored guest; without sincerity of heart, the guest will not come.
The Food God is what the Day Master generates, and by nature can generate Wealth. Wealth is the source of sustaining life. Only a pure Food God can single-mindedly generate the Wealth Star, which in turn generates Officer, forming an interlocking virtuous chain. Building achievements, amassing wealth, and attaining honor in examinations—all require an attitude and effort of utmost sincerity that can move metal and stone. The "purity" of the Food God does not refer to moral purity, but rather to its functional singleness of purpose and refined concentration.
The Food God itself represents the purest essence, and its nature inherently rejects mixture—no further elaboration is needed.
When the principal Qi of a Miscellaneous Qi month (Chen, Xu, Chou, Wei) emerges, the Food God pattern may still be established:
However, if non-principal Qi emerges, the Food God is not considered. For example:
The key to determination lies in: whether the emerging Heavenly Stem is the principal Qi of the Month Command. If the principal Qi emerges, the pattern is established; if miscellaneous Qi emerges, the pattern is not established.
The Food God pattern takes the Food God as its foundation. Wealth, Officer, Resource, and Food are the Four Auspicious Spirits. The pattern's principle for handling auspicious spirits is:
The Food God pattern most delights in:
The Food God pattern most fears:
Core Essence: A flourishing Food God surpasses Wealth and Officer. The key to the Food God pattern lies in keeping the Food God in a thriving state.
The Food God has two major functions: generating Wealth and combining Officer/Resource. To fulfill these functions, besides requiring the Food God to be "pure," it must also be flourishing and vigorous. When the Food God flourishes, it can generate pure Wealth. The Food God is the source of Wealth; when the source water is abundant, naturally wealth pours in 🌊.
The Food God is ultimately what the Day Master generates—producing the Food God necessarily expends the Day Master's own energy. Therefore, the Day Master must be vigorous. If the Day Master is weak and Wealth stars are also present, the pattern's constitution becomes severely compromised.
For example: Although a nation may have abundant natural resources (Food God generating Wealth), if the rate of extraction far exceeds what the nation can bear (weak body unable to carry Wealth), resources are quickly depleted, and sustainable development becomes a fantasy.
Applied to the individual, the Food God represents the Day Master's ideas, talent, and skills. If the Day Master is feeble, how can there be a surging flow of literary inspiration, brilliant talent, or peerless skill? The importance of a vigorous Day Master in the Food God pattern requires no further elaboration 💪.
The Food God has a natural propensity to generate Wealth, so it most delights in encountering the Wealth Star. Food God generating Wealth is generation with merit. Just as a nation with advanced technology and abundant talent will inevitably see its economic strength rise steadily, an individual with skills cannot possibly end up on the streets or starving.
The Food God delights in seeing Direct Officer and Direct Resource. All three are auspicious spirits that naturally resonate with each other and coexist harmoniously. However, there is one precondition: the Direct Officer and Direct Resource must be flourishing and vigorous—they cannot be dead, extinct, or weak without vitality. No matter how auspicious a spirit may be, without vitality it is merely a name in vain.
When the Food God pattern encounters the Injury Officer, it is like:
The pattern becomes turbid. At this point, the Food God is polluted by the Injury Officer, and the chart will manifest very obvious Injury Officer characteristics.
"If the Food is hidden and the Injury is revealed, the nature is as rigid as steel"
The Food God is gentle; the Injury Officer is fierce. If the Injury Officer emerges while the Food God is hidden in branches, the Injury Officer's fierce nature completely suppresses the Food God's gentleness—guest overthrows master. This is like sewage being mixed into clear water:
Ash can dirty white, but white cannot conceal ash.
When the Injury Officer pattern encounters the Food God, it is transformation toward the orthodox; when the Food God pattern encounters the Injury Officer, it is straying onto the wrong path. The directions are opposite, and the outcomes are radically different.
The Raven God attacks and suppresses the Food God from multiple angles, making it the most severe taboo of the Food God pattern:
The Raven God seizing Food brings a solitary nature, jealous and narrow-minded; If the Concubine Star comes to assist, it transforms into a pillar that none can rival.
However good the Food God is, the Raven God is equally bad. When encountering the Raven God:
The Raven God is like a criminal underworld force that must be struck down and subdued. And Indirect Wealth is the Raven God's natural nemesis.
Direct Wealth is the wife; Indirect Wealth is the concubine, therefore the Indirect Wealth Star is also called the Concubine Star.
Why can Indirect Wealth subdue the Raven God?
From the perspective of the Ten Gods, Indirect Wealth is the Raven God's Seven Killings—in the Five Elements, it can naturally control the Raven God. But this is merely the fundamental factor, not the root cause.
The true reason lies at the ethical level:
The principles of destiny mirror the principles of human affairs. BaZi is a theoretical system for predicting "human beings" and must conform to the laws of social operation. The generating and controlling interactions of the Ten Gods perfectly embody this principle.
The stepmother "pretends to nurture but doesn't truly nurture" the Day Master—she does not act with sincerity and sometimes bullies the child. At such times, what is most needed is the biological father's presence, to overawe the stepmother, making her behave as a proper wife and treat the Day Master kindly—this is the core of the Ten Gods' generating/controlling principle behind why Indirect Wealth can subdue the Raven God 🏛️.
When the Day Master is weak, it lacks the strength to drive the Food God, and the pattern is naturally constrained. This principle is the mirror image of the aforementioned "vigorous body as an auspicious condition" and requires no repetition.
The essence of the Food God pattern is the external manifestation of the Day Master's finest essence—the concentrated expression of talent, skill, and creativity. The Food God's "purity" represents focus and professionalism; the Food God's "vigor" represents expressive power and productive output; and a vigorous Day Master is the material foundation of all this. All three are indispensable, forming the "Iron Triangle" of the Food God pattern:
| Element | Function | Consequence of Absence |
|---|---|---|
| Pure Food God | Single-minded refinement; can combine Officer/Resource | Pattern becomes turbid; functions fail |
| Vigorous Food God | Generates Wealth powerfully; wealth pours in | Talented but without output |
| Vigorous Day Master | Supports Food God's expression | Inspiration dries up; lacks staying power |
In the modern context, the Food God represents core competitiveness:
The auspicious and inauspicious structure of the Food God pattern can be converted into a practical self-management framework:
The "purity" of the Food God pattern reveals a profound philosophical proposition: the infinite within the finite.
The Food God must be pure, which means exchanging breadth for depth—abandoning the illusion of being good at everything, pushing to excellence in one specific domain, and thereby unleashing value that transcends the individual. This is highly consistent with the Taoist principle that "less leads to gain, much leads to confusion."
The "hidden invitation" mechanism is even more intriguing: the Food God does not directly encounter Officer or Resource, yet can summon them through combining. This demonstrates that the power of absence can sometimes be more significant than presence. True attraction comes from the pure value of one's essence, not from deliberate pursuit. Those with a pure and vigorous Food God will have Officer and Resource (status, recognition) come naturally; conversely, those who eagerly chase fame often find the opposite outcome.
The ethical metaphor of the Raven God seizing Food—the stepmother needing the biological father's overawe—reminds us that: the maintenance of order cannot rely solely on individual self-discipline; it also requires structural forces of checks and balances. In personal growth, this means one cannot rely solely on willpower to resist interference; external constraint mechanisms (environmental design, accountability systems, institutional safeguards) must also be established.
