Chapter 11 of 50
基础知识
This section explains the basic meanings and symbol-taking methods of the Direct Resource (正印).
"The one that generates me is the Resource." When the generating element is of a different Yin-Yang polarity, it is called the Direct Resource. It is called "Direct" because the generation between opposite polarities embodies the inner law of the Dao 🌱.
The one that generates me is like a mother—the Direct Resource is one's biological mother. A person whose chart carries the Direct Resource has the deepest blessings, because the Direct Resource represents life-giving energy, like strands of vitality continuously flowing into the body. Its most fundamental manifestation is shelter and protection—it both nurtures you and safeguards you.
Starting from the core meaning of "shelter and protection," we can concretize it and derive a rich set of symbolic correspondences:
🏠 A house is one's dwelling, harbor, and also a place of protection, so the Resource can represent a house. Similarly, the Resource can also represent a car, because one can sit inside it. Anything that allows a person to "sit inside" can basically be represented by the Resource—airplanes, boats, offices, rental apartments, prison cells, and so on.
🏫 Schools are also a form of Resource, because they can "contain people." Thus, the Resource can represent schools. By further extension, the Resource can represent educational degrees, student IDs, and diplomas. To assess a person's educational level, one can reference the state of the Resource star in the natal chart: if the Resource star is attacked and broken with no salvation, the educational level will naturally be affected; if the Resource star thrives and is favorable to the Day Master, the educational level should be quite good.
💍 In addition to student IDs and diplomas, the Resource also represents marriage certificates and divorce certificates. If both the Direct Resource and the Indirect Resource (偏印) appear simultaneously in a chart, the likelihood of marital problems increases—because "both certificates are complete."
📄 In summary, the Resource star can represent all certificates and documents. In addition to the marriage certificates, divorce certificates, student IDs, and diplomas mentioned above, it can also represent driver's licenses, award certificates, property titles, birth certificates, and so on. The Resource also represents contracts: if in a passing year the Direct Resource is attacked, or the Direct Resource damages the native chart's structure, then the person may encounter difficulties signing contracts during business or project dealings.
🏛 The Resource also represents the official seal (印信)—the credential of wielding power. Officers can generate the Resource; when the state appoints you, it naturally bestows the seal upon you—that is, appointment letters and transfer orders. Therefore, those in official positions tend to favor having the Resource star in their charts, because the Resource can protect the Officer star and nourish the Day Master, representing authority in hand.
👔 Similarly, the Resource can extend to include clothing. If the Direct Resource is unbroken, it signifies good clothing; if the Direct Resource is punished or harmed, it signifies tattered or unsightly clothing. Likewise, shoes, scarves, hats, socks, and skirts can all be represented by the Resource—because for the human body, all these things carry the connotation of "wrapping."
📦 The Resource possesses the connotation of "wrapping," equivalent to cover in English. Therefore, anything with a wrapping quality can be represented by the Resource, such as quilts, bags, shells, surfaces of objects, and coverings. These meanings are highly practical for refined symbolic interpretation.
Beyond the concrete objects listed above, the personality and ethical connotations represented by the Direct Resource are as follows:
🐝 The Direct Resource star represents diligence, because the Direct Resource is the energy that generates the self, steadily and earnestly. Of course, if there are too many Direct Resources in a chart, the life-giving force becomes overwhelming, and whatever the person wants comes too easily—manifesting as some laxness. Note: this "laxness" does not mean outright laziness; it requires careful distinction.
⚖ The Direct Resource represents guiding principles and moral bottom lines. This is discussed from a social perspective. For example, when a person follows traffic rules, the traffic rules are also protecting that person. Morality works the same way—it constrains people while also protecting them. Therefore, most people with the Direct Resource in their charts are virtuous people. Of course, this also depends on the state of the Direct Resource: if it is accompanied by malicious sha (恶煞) or is attacked, it may manifest as being without virtue or without moral limits.
🧘 When the Direct Resource appears in a chart without attack or breakage, the person tends to be calm, steady, and reliable; if the Direct Resource is in poor condition, the person may wander without rest—just like a house that is rushed or damaged, naturally leaving no place to live, and the information about drifting comes through.
The meanings of the Resource are exceptionally rich. Based on the above foundational content, one can expand the thinking widely, which is helpful for refined symbolic interpretation during chart reading.

The core of the Direct Resource lies in the two-in-one nature of "generation" and "protection":
| Level | Meaning | Correspondence in Reality |
|---|---|---|
| Root | The one that generates me, mutual generation of Yin and Yang | The source and continuity of life energy |
| Function | Protection, shelter | Everything that can "contain" or "wrap" the person |
| Social | Official seal, authority | Legitimation credentials granted by institutions |
| Ethical | Moral bottom line, guiding principles | The relationship between internal constraints and external protection |
| Personality | Diligence, steadiness | The sense of security when supported |
Key logical chain: Generates me → Protects me → Anything that contains, wraps, or validates me is the Resource → From the material (house, car, clothing) to the institutional (certificates, contracts, appointments) to the spiritual (ethics, principles), layer by layer of extension.
The traditional symbolism of the Direct Resource maps naturally onto modern society:
Modern extension of "house and car" symbolism: The original text states that "everything one can sit inside can be represented by the Resource." This logic can naturally extend to co-working spaces, ride-hailing cars, or even a "personal account page" in the virtual space. Anything that provides "containment" and "protection" fundamentally carries the nature of the Resource.
Contemporary expansion of "certificates and documents": Modern society has far more types of certificates than ancient times—academic degrees, professional qualifications, patent certificates, business licenses, and even digital identity credentials all fall within the Resource's scope. When assessing a person's "qualification" and "institutional backing" in modern society, the state of the Resource star is an important reference dimension.
Sociological correspondence of the "moral bottom line": The original text states that "morality is used to constrain and protect people," which aligns highly with modern society's understanding of "rule consciousness." Those who follow rules are also protected by the rules. A person with the Direct Resource in the chart, when the Resource star is in good condition, typically exhibits strong rule awareness and values social norms; conversely, when the Resource star is damaged, regulation violation becomes more likely.
The dialectic of "diligence" and "laxness": The logic that an excess of Direct Resource leads to "laxness" can be analogized in modern psychology to "reduced motivation under resource abundance." When a person receives ample support and protection from childhood, their proactivity may decrease—consistent with the mechanism described in the original text, "what one desires comes easily."
In Bazi analysis, the basic symbolism of the Direct Resource serves as a foundational tool for refined interpretation:
Educational assessment: Examine the state of the Resource star in the natal chart—whether it is attacked, whether it has rescue, and whether it is favorable. For example, if the Resource star is broken by the Wealth star with no Officer/Killing star to bridge the conflict, the educational path easily encounters obstacles; if the Resource star gains root and is favorable, learning ability and credential acquisition proceed smoothly.
Marriage information: When both Direct and Indirect Resources appear mixed together, pay attention to the symbolic meaning of "both certificates being present," and judge marital stability in combination with the Palace of Spouse and the Spouse star.
Contract risks in passing years: If in a passing year the Direct Resource is attacked or damages the natal configuration, one should exercise extra caution when signing contracts or handling documentation, and it is advisable to add legal review steps.
Personality assessment: Those with a well-conditioned Direct Resource suit positions that require steadiness, reliability, and rule-following, such as administrative management, education, legal affairs, archives management, etc. Those with an over-abundant Direct Resource should have the distinction between "laxness" and "laziness" carefully observed; guidance should focus on stimulating intrinsic motivation.
Symbol-practice method: It is suggested to use "wrapping—protection—containment" as the core keywords and practice categorizing everyday objects (e.g., phone case → Resource, safe → Resource, visa → Resource), cultivating divergent symbolic thinking.
The philosophical core of the Direct Resource is the dialectical unity of "generation" and "protection":
Generation within protection, protection within generation: A mother gives birth to and raises her children—she both bestows life and provides protection. In Daoist philosophy, this embodies the principle of Yin-Yang mutual generation within the Dao. The Direct Resource is called "Direct" precisely because generation between opposite polarities follows the natural order of the Dao.
Constraint is protection: The original text uses traffic rules as an example to demonstrate that "rules protect while constraining." This deeply connects with the discussion of "freedom versus order" in modern political philosophy—true freedom is never without constraints, but rather autonomy within reasonable rules. The "moral bottom line" represented by the Direct Resource is essentially a symbiotic contract between the individual and society.
The ontological meaning of "wrapping": All existence requires a "container" to define itself—the body is the container of the soul, the house is the container of the body, and institutions are containers of the individual. The Direct Resource, as a "containing force," reveals the basic structure of existing things: without a container, there is no security; without security, there is no development.
