Chapter 3 of 30
奇门遁甲秘笈大全
This volume is mainly divided into three major sections.
The first is the Ten Heavenly Stems Mutual Response Formula, which discusses the patterns formed when the Heavenly Plate Heavenly Stem is placed over the Earthly Plate Heavenly Stem in Qimen Dunjia. Since Wood Yin (Jia) is hidden within Earth Yang (Wu), Wu therefore represents Jia, which is also the Talisman Holder. Wu over Wu is called "Hidden Lament," indicating that matters are blocked and stagnant, and stillness and defense are favorable. From Wu over Yi, Wu over Bing, all the way to Gui over Ren and Gui over Gui, there are a total of ninety combinations, each with its own designated pattern name and auspicious/inauspicious determination. The core logic is: one cannot only look at the combination of Heavenly Stems themselves, but must also integrate conditions such as the auspiciousness of the Doors, whether it encounters the Tomb, Oppression, Attack, or Punishment, as well as the Stars and Spirits for comprehensive judgment. With the same pattern, if the Door is auspicious, the matter is auspicious; if the Door is inauspicious, the matter is inauspicious. Sometimes it is further distinguished by different categories of matters such as dynamic versus static, host versus guest, public versus private, male versus female, illness, and litigation.
The second is the Response of the Hour Stem Placed over the Six Jia through Six Gui. It treats the Hour Stem as the external cause, and the Earthly Plate's Six Jia through Six Gui as the internal cause, explaining what kind of "Heavenly Timing" coordination one obtains when acting at a certain时辰 (double-hour). The Six Jia governs opening and closing transitions; Six Yi governs murky comings and goings; Six Bing governs princes and the majesty of heaven; Six Ding governs receiving aid in obscurity; Six Wu governs riding the dragon for ten thousand li; Six Ji governs secret concealment and hiding; Six Geng governs conflict, punishment, and injury; Six Xin governs calamity and punishment entangling the body; Six Ren governs official prohibition and unexpected misfortune; Six Gui governs the earthly net closing and blocking. The overall principle is: encountering Yi, Bing, Ding, or Wu is mostly favorable for action; encountering Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, or Gui mostly indicates obstruction, punishment, injury, or concealment, and is only suitable for retreating, defending, or going into seclusion.
The third is the Response of the Tian Peng Star, Tian Rui Star, and Tian Chong Star during the twelve double-hours. Each star first has a general verse summarizing its general auspiciousness or inauspiciousness; it then lists, respectively, for the twelve double-hours of Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, and Hai, the "external responses" — that is, the abnormal people, objects, sounds, beasts, and celestial phenomena that suddenly appear in the environment — as well as the "post-action verification" — that is, the possible results that may appear days, dozens of days, or even years after the event. The ancients used this to judge the auspicious or inauspicious trend of undertaking a certain matter at a particular double-hour. The Tian Peng Star is beneficial for competition, litigation, and military matters, but mostly indicates verbal disputes and financial loss. The Tian Rui Star is beneficial for making friends and cultivating the Way, but travel and construction are mostly inauspicious. The Tian Chong Star mostly indicates upheaval and impact; marriage, burial, travel, and relocation are all unfavorable — one should proceed slowly rather than hastily.
Heavenly Plate Wu placed over the Earthly Plate Heavenly Stem — because Jia is hidden within Wu, Wu is therefore the Talisman Holder.
