Tai Gong said: In all matters of host and guest relations, motion and stillness are by nature not fixed, and transformations are difficult to fathom. Therefore, host and guest are not rigid concepts: sometimes the one who moves first is the guest, and the one who moves later is the host; sometimes the one in motion is the guest, and the one at rest is the host; sometimes the one who speaks out first is the guest; sometimes the Heaven Plate is the guest, and the Earth Plate is the host. Each type of affair has its corresponding secret method, and the key to success or failure, victory or defeat lies in distinguishing host from guest.
For example, when dispatching troops to attack an enemy, our side is the guest, and upon arriving at the enemy's position, the enemy becomes the host; or the bandits' lair and the cities they have occupied are considered the host; or yang is the guest and yin is the host; there may also arise the situation of the guest turning into the host, and the host turning into the guest. In matters such as selecting generals, seeking the worthy, recruiting soldiers, acquiring horses, visiting noble persons, or calling upon friends, our side is the guest, and the other party is the host. If someone comes to seek me, or notifies me while I am still unaware, then the other party is the guest and I am the host. Whether two armies are face to face or not yet engaged, host and guest must still be distinguished. If at this moment engaging in combat favors the guest, one should first display martial might, fire cannons, and shout battle cries; if it favors the host, then one should lower the banners, cease the drums, maintain silence, and lie in ambush to achieve victory.
Whenever dispatching troops, one must consider the distance of the bandits' lair. If battle commences immediately upon dispatch, or if the engagement is not simultaneous, then one cannot simply take the one who moves first as the guest. One must wait until facing the enemy to determine host and guest, applying it flexibly at that time. If at that moment neither host nor guest positions are advantageous, one should only hold fast in defense; if the situation is urgent, or if besieged, one should win through strategy. One may employ methods such as divination calculations, sealing the Six Wu, riding the Heavenly Horse, or writing talismans, reciting incantations, and other auxiliary techniques. In general, matters of state, provincial and county affairs, household matters, legal disputes, grave sites, seeking plans, fame and profit, marriage, travelers, losses, flights, and captures—all take the Earth Plate as the host and the Heaven Plate as the guest. Human affairs are numerous and difficult to describe in detail; generally speaking, the Heaven Plate stars generating and harmonizing with the Earth Plate is most auspicious, while the Earth Plate generating and harmonizing with the Heaven Plate is secondary. If the guest generates the host, it signifies having one's wishes fulfilled and gaining manifold benefits; if the host generates the guest, it signifies dissipation, delay, and hindrance; if host and guest are in harmony, then action and rest both proceed smoothly; if the host overcomes the guest, it is half-real and half-empty, self-defeating and illusory, and affairs are difficult to accomplish; if the guest overcomes the host, then there is defeat without accomplishment, and seeking good fortune instead invites disaster. Thus, those skilled in using Qi Men first distinguish host from guest, then clarify the divination method. If this moment favors the host, I become the host; if this moment favors the guest, I become the guest. Or one may take aggressive action as the guest, and non-aggression as the host—it all lies in the single-minded weighing of my own will, and one must not rigidly adhere to one method. Being host or guest is flexibly determined by me.
In all arrangements of Qi Men Dun Jia, first observe the celestial phenomena, then examine the subtle details. The key lies in the single-minded application of the mind—this cannot be unknown. For example, if the Heaven Plate's Nine Stars, Strange Instruments, and Eight Gates belong to Metal, and they are placed upon stars on the Earth Plate belonging to Wood, this is Metal coming to overcome Wood—an image of the guest harming the host. In warfare, this favors the guest side; troops should strike first, firing cannons and shouting, with high morale, and can win a hundred battles. However, for seeking plans, formal visits, and trade transactions, this indicates ruin, anxiety, and fright for the host, darkness and gloom for the guest's position, susceptibility to robbers and petty people—only the traveler is about to arrive. If Metal is vigorous and Wood is declining, the inauspicious image is especially severe. If the Heaven Plate Metal star is in a state of decline, tomb, death, or extremity when placed upon Wood, then Metal without vitality cannot overcome Wood; if Wood is in a state of growth and vigor, then conversely the Wood star is auspicious; if Wood is also in a state of decline, tomb, or extremity, misfortune is ultimately unavoidable.
If the Heaven Plate Wood star is placed upon the Earth Plate Fire star, this is Wood able to generate Fire—in warfare this favors the host side, and all kinds of affairs can be fulfilled as desired. If layers of Wood energy approach the palace of growth and vigor, this is called "Wood that covets generation"—Wood that is too vigorous instead suppresses Fire's force, causing Fire to lose its brilliance and gradually extinguish itself. If Wood approaches a palace of retreating energy, or if Wood energy is meager, it is mostly withered wood generating fire—greatly favorable to the host army.
If the Heaven Plate Earth is placed upon the Earth Plate Metal, this is the guest coming to generate the host. If Earth is vigorous or heavy, although it is said to generate Metal, heavy Earth will bury Metal, indicating hidden troops in ambush, or heroes losing their ambition, or loyal martyrs suffering injustice.
If the Heaven Plate Wood is placed upon the Earth Plate Metal, this is the host harming the guest—one should lower banners, silence drums, and await the enemy in stillness to achieve a great victory. In all schemes and endeavors, affairs will mostly meet with ruin and have a beginning without an end. Only the pursuit of fame and prominence, official matters of gain and loss, and travel are auspicious.
If the Heaven Plate Metal is placed upon the Earth Plate Earth, this is the host generating the guest—one should display martial might, and troops may set out and return victorious; the guest army wins greatly. In all schemes and endeavors, there will be losses from beginning to end, with toil and hardship, but ultimately one will receive assistance and achieve stability and propriety.
The wondrous methods of Qi Men all lie in the four Heavenly Stems of Year, Month, Day, and Hour. By carefully examining whether they form auspicious or inauspicious patterns upon being placed in the Nine Palaces, one can infer the success or failure of all kinds of human affairs—sage rulers, worthy ministers, filial sons, compassionate grandsons, parents, wives and concubines, servants, relatives, and neighbors.
The Year Stem represents the sovereign and parents; the Month Stem represents ministers and paternal uncles; the Day Stem represents brothers and friends; the Hour Stem represents wives, concubines, children, soldiers, and servants.
If the Heaven Plate Year Stem forms an auspicious pattern, if the Door generates the Palace, or if upper and lower are in mutual harmony, this indicates a peaceful nation with contented people, and the sovereign, ministers, father, and son enjoying fortune, longevity, and well-being. If the Year Stem forms an inauspicious pattern, or is clashed and overwhelmed, this indicates warfare across the four seas, agitation of body and mind, injury to flesh and blood kinsmen, calamity, distress, anxiety, and alarm.
If the Month Stem receives generation from the Heaven Plate, or forms an auspicious pattern, this indicates loyal ministers and valiant warriors assisting the nation and comforting the people, elevation of rank and bestowal of titles, and all affairs proceeding satisfactorily. If it forms an inauspicious pattern and is also controlled, this indicates treacherous ministers usurping power, dismissal from office, separation of the six relations, and poverty and hardship with aimless wandering.
If the Day Stem receives generation and harmony from the Heaven Plate's Eight Gates in an auspicious pattern, this indicates harmony among brothers, noble joy approaching the household, personal security with friends' assistance, and all schemes and plans fulfilling the heart's desires. If the Day Stem is overcome or forms an inauspicious pattern, this indicates injury to brothers, discord among the six relations, personal distress, and the attraction of calamity.
If the Hour Stem receives generation and harmony from the Heaven Plate in an auspicious pattern, this indicates a worthy and capable wife, elite and valiant soldiers, and effective servants; if it forms an inauspicious pattern and is also clashed and overwhelmed, this indicates injury to children, discord between father and son, mutiny among the troops, and servants bullying their masters.
In all cases where Six Geng is placed upon the Year, Month, Day, or Hour Stem, or where the Year, Month, Day, or Hour Stem is placed upon Six Geng, one must look at which Stem the Six Geng has been placed upon to know the fortune or misfortune of the corresponding person. Combining with an auspicious pattern brings greater fortune; combining with an inauspicious pattern brings greater misfortune, indicating discord among flesh and blood, and personal peril and distress.
For example, in Yang Dun Pattern 3, on a Ji Day with Ding Mao Hour, the Hour Stem is in the Nine Palace at the Li position encountering the Open Door, with Dun Jia Wu and the Heavenly Rush star arriving together at the palace, while the Alarm Door and Geng are in the Kun Second Palace. If seen on a Ji Day, this is the Flying Stem Pattern, indicating discord among brothers, friends turning against each other, and personal calamity and distress. As another example, in Yang Dun Pattern 9, on a Yi or Geng Day with Bing Zi Hour, one obtains the auspicious Green Dragon Turning Its Head pattern, indicating noble joy filling the household, personal security with friends' assistance, and every scheme fulfilling the heart's desires. If one wishes to examine the Year Stem, Month Stem, or Hour Stem, one must set up a new chart and calculate separately; one cannot rely solely on this single chart, or fortune and misfortune will not be verified.
Humans are the most spiritual of all beings, able to resonate with the responses of all matters. The key lies in the movement and stillness of a single moment and place—taking the people, affairs, vessels, and objects of the present moment to deduce military victory or defeat, gains and losses in life, and the success or failure of things. When dispatching troops, one may take the day and hour of mobilizing the masses, dispatching horses, and establishing camp as the starting point, or begin from the day and hour of gains and losses in human affairs, separations and unions, or the acquisition of vessels and objects, calculating day by day. Observe on which day and hour it is advantageous to engage in combat and win, on which day and hour the bandits will come, in which direction and at which hour to ambush at which location, and on which day and hour success will be achieved and triumphant return accomplished.
If one wishes to know a person's longevity or premature death, poverty or prosperity, take that person's natal year, month, day, and hour and cast the chart; wife, wealth, children, and emolument can all be known from this. For all vessel breakage, success or failure, and duration, take the day and hour when the object was obtained, or the time when it was first seen, as well as the object's length, width, and shape, and match it to the Five Elements according to its category, coordinating with Dun Jia, and one can predict the object's damage, theft, and other circumstances.
In the military camp, whenever one sees or hears something—encountering objects displaced, tilted, scattered, or gold drums sounding; or hearing favorable or unfavorable speech; or seeing banners and drums in damaged condition; or birds and beasts coming from a certain direction—any unusual sight or sound can serve as an omen of fortune or misfortune. Whether hearing a few words or characters of human speech, or a few irregular sounds of gold drums, or the occasional distant sound of musical instruments, any object that enters the eye at a glance can be utilized. The efficacy of divination lies in the instant of mental activation; one must be lively and adaptable. Take care never to take this object and then that object, causing fortune and misfortune to remain undetermined. If taking one object fails to yield an accurate divination, and then taking another object also fails, it is because the mind has not settled, and thus fortune and misfortune cannot be verified.
The method of taking numerical correspondences from external responses: If one encounters one character, one dot, one object, one sound, one person, or one beast, that is the number one; two is Chou, three is Yin, and so on in sequence. For example, on a Jia or Ji Day, when the Jia Zi Hour commences, if the number is thirteen, take it as the first occurrence of the Bing Zi Hour; if the number is greater and all fall within Zi hours, then it would be the third, fourth, or fifth occurrences: Wu Zi, Geng Zi, Ren Zi. If the number exceeds beyond the five Zi hours, then undertake Yi Chou, Ding Chou, Ji Chou, Xin Chou, Gui Chou. All countless hours follow this same principle.
When dispatching troops, one must carefully examine the natal charts of the commanding officers and all leaders of various ranks, matching them with auspicious and inauspicious patterns. Whether one can attack, whether one is suited for ambush, whether one is suited for frontal assault, whether one is suited for reinforcement—the key is to see which person is suited for which task and arrange accordingly, ensuring that the entire army operates without error.
The Two Principles govern all, and the Three Powers are duly distinguished. Pacing incantations can command spirits and ghosts; maintaining the chart can penetrate the wondrous essence. The ancients abridged the spiritual texts and arrayed the essential principles of all classics.
Jia encountering Bing is Green Dragon Turning Its Head; Bing encountering Jia is Flying Bird Returning to Its Cave. Turning Its Head means joy is easily attained; Returning to Its Cave means prominence and success are easily achieved. Yi encountering Xin is Dragon Fleeing, indicating bodily injury and ruin; Xin encountering Yi is Tiger Rampant, indicating depletion of wealth and resources. Gui seeing Ding is Serpent Agitating and Twisting; Ding seeing Gui is Vermilion Bird Diving into the River.
The Life Door encountering Bing and Wu is the Heavenly Escape, advantageous for deploying troops; the Open Door with Yi as the Strange Star and positioned over Ji is the Earthly Escape, advantageous for establishing graves; the Rest Door with Ding as the Strange Star encountering Tai Yin is the Human Escape, advantageous for setting up camp.
Geng placed on the Day Stem is the Hidden Stem Pattern; the Day Stem placed on Geng is the Flying Stem Pattern. Geng placed on the Commander is the Hidden Palace Pattern; the Commander placed on Geng is the Flying Palace Pattern. The Great Pattern is Geng placed on Six Gui; the Punishment Pattern is Geng placed on Six Ji. Wherever these patterns point, they are inauspicious, and no endeavor should be undertaken.
The Hour Stem controlling the Day Stem is the Five Unencountered Hour, indicating calamity. The Bing Star arriving at the Hour Stem is called Acting Against the Order, indicating disaster arising. When the Three Strange Stars gain command, all goodness arrives; when the Six Instruments strike against punishment, all catastrophes converge.
Vermilion Bird entering the Blazing Fire means bandits will come; Fire entering the Metal Realm means bandits will depart. The Earth Net obstructing ahead means one should not advance; the Heavenly Net spread on all four sides means there is no road of escape. The Commander's Palace and the Heavenly Scepter position are taken together as one. When faced with urgent danger, one should proceed from the direction of the Commander.
Reversal and sequence from the Two Solstices hold the mysterious and profound principle. Yang Dun proceeds from the twelve solar terms before the Winter Solstice: behind the Commander the first is Nine Heaven, the second is Nine Earth, ahead the third is Six Union, and ahead the second is Tai Yin. Yin Dun proceeds from the twelve solar terms before the Summer Solstice: ahead of the Commander the first is Nine Heaven, the second is Nine Earth, the fifth is Six Union, and the seventh is Tai Yin. Tai Yin conceals form for stealthy escape; Six Union conceals the body for planning deliberations; above Nine Heaven one displays martial might; below Nine Earth one conceals troops and horses. When Heaven and Earth are both prepared, matters become incalculable; the divine machinations and wondrous functions are beyond measurement. Those who study—when facing affairs, have plans; hold this prose in mind, and you shall not be beguiled.
This text is called the "Method of Selecting Residences by Three White," and it originates from the eighty-one discourses of the Dutian Hanlong Jing. Tai Yi, Zi Wei, Nine Absolutes, and Eight Trigrams are the marrow of heaven and earth and the pivotal mechanism of the stars. The Eight Trigrams transform alternately and extend to infinity; the Five Elements rotate and respond without exhaustion. Taking the Nine Stars as the Nine Absolutes and the Eight Doors as the Eight Trigrams, above it can supplement the incomplete transformations of heaven and earth; below it can assist what the sovereign's power cannot accomplish, supporting the imperiled, aiding the auspicious, and issuing forth blessings and auspicious signs. It travels together through the twelve branches' chart and is specially matched with the configurations of the twenty-eight mansions. This text is precisely the guiding principle of heaven and earth, illuminating the warp and woof of yin and yang—mysterious in penetrating the hidden and concealed, illustrious in manifesting the approach to the profound.
Behold the gates of the Eight Trigrams, arranged in the ways of the Nine Palaces, advancing and retreating the Six Jia, and commanding the Six Instruments. The Heavenly Scepter Commander governs the chart's movement; the Grand Messenger governs its commands. The Strange Stars are shifted by the Six Instruments, encountered through the Eight Solar Terms, with upper and lower shaking luminance, internal and external correspondence. The Three Plates rotate the chart, and all Eight Trigrams interconnect. When encountering auspiciousness, all matters may be undertaken; when encountering inauspiciousness, not the slightest action should be taken.
The methods are first called the "Nine Trigrams of the Capital Heaven," second, "Entering the Earth's Three Origins," third, "The Three Strange Stars of Marching," fourth, "Selecting Residences by Three White," fifth, "The Book of Concealing Form in Great White," sixth, "The Secret of Shaking the Dragon in Eight Mountains," seventh, "The Nine-Character Canon of Turning Mountains and Moving Waters," eighth, "The Ten-Thousand-Year Golden Mirror of Establishing the Nation and Pacifying the Realm," and ninth, "The Primordial Palace." Obtaining blessings to rescue the poor, giving birth to immortals and sage minds—transforming fortune and misfortune like turning the palm, making poverty and wealth appear ordinary. If at three encounters one meets Qi Men, it is like the flood dragon gaining clouds and rain; seeing the Six Union encountering configurations is like the tiger and leopard growing wings. Beware of taking the declining and imprisoned, guard against their punishments and blows. If the Strange Stars should arrive, they must be upon auspicious positions where the doors open. Position by position all should be suitable; door by door all should be auspicious. Only when one fits them into their essential context and still discusses each specific hour—when the stems are not imprisoned, the branches are not controlled, the spirits concealed and the baleful influences vanquished—only then will one know that all matters are in harmony.
Reversed patterns and Concealed patterns are certainly where a thousand calamities gather. When the Strange Stars encounter vigor and flourishing, it is a plan for wealth and honor; when doors encounter Open and Rest, it coordinates with the response of heroes. Encountering Green Dragon Turning Its Head brings the exquisite scrutiny of Jia and Yi; encountering White Tiger Rampant reveals the inauspicious disasters of Geng and Xin. If one encounters Serpent Agitating and Twisting, one knows the turbulent eminence of Ren and Gui; if one happens upon Vermilion Bird Diving into the River, it governs the apparitions of Bing and Ding. When Flying Bird Returns to Its Cave, one may say all affairs are auspicious; when the Noble One Ascends the Altar, one may be certain that all Nine Palaces celebrate. Penetrating the heavenly mechanism, heaven and earth all turn; attaining the wondrous function, everything encountered prospers.
For civil and military officials undertaking construction, their ranks and positions will all increase; or for the common people moving graves, it supports the imperiled and creates blessings. Establishing prefectures brings the people peace and things abundant; raising counties brings prosperity and equity in rents; building palaces brings blessings gathered and people rely upon them; constructing temples brings ghosts pacified and spirits at ease. Bridges, postal stations, wells, stoves, and roads, or all various other undertakings—choose and arrange with care and completeness. Whether the Grand Duke of the Year or the General reside there, all respectfully yield; let any of the Nine Beneficences and Seven Baleful Influences dare not front it. Regardless of various schools' circulations of fortune, they cannot exceed or contrive its workings. If one offends against the Voids and Forbidden Balefulness, one must only have the Strange Stars in their positions, and one may guarantee a thousand years and summon a hundred blessings. Most suitable for breaking ground, opening earth, and burying ancestors—one must ensure the Strange Stars observe the throne and the doors and gates are opened.
For those with a Green Dragon mountain, one must seek the Green Dragon Turning Its Head; for those with a White Tiger, greatly avoid the Rampant White Tiger; for those with a Dark Warrior, keep away from the Agitating and Twisting Serpent; for those with a Vermilion Bird, fear its Diving into the River. Thus one welcomes and avoids, purposely matching and seeking. When encountering Flying Bird Returning to Its Cave, then there will be strange birds leaving carved nests, colored fowl dropping feathers; abandoned dead birds, egrets and cranes returning with eels—immortal cranes coming to cry, colored luan birds descending from above. The Four Holds all being auspicious is auspicious; damage at both extremities is inauspicious. When the Noble One ascends the altar, there will surely be banners and flags multiplying, thunder and lightning with wind and clouds, seals and documents, golden seals and purple sashes. On days and hours obtaining the Green Dragon Turning Its Head, then jade scales will lie concealed and golden fish will sink into caves; the Serpent transforms and mirages arise, horses rush and thunder roars, flames gather around gold and silver, pennants and flower ornaments tie brilliance together in acclamation—all come in response to the hour to assist its fortune.
Each has its corresponding augury—combine with the mountain's head, and there is no concern of a single failure in ten thousand; with movement there is perfection in all ten parts. Distribute its essential threads, arrange its guiding outlines; set forth entirely in a thousand headings and clarify ten thousand affairs. It is not merely that plans encounter fortune; it is that heaven and earth present auspicious signs, aiding the nation, pacifying the state, relieving the people, and benefiting all things. One who obtains it should enshrine it in jade caskets and golden receptacles—it is truly what may be called the most precious treasure of the sage emperor's royal house.
When the Jia or Ji Day resides in the Middle, it encounters the Upper Cycle; when Each of the Four Holds occupies the midday position, the Middle Cycle is sound; the Lower Cycle follows what below is found. Five days complete one cycle, circulating fully through Yin and Yang Double Dun; ten hours rule one Jia, the method used is all the same. Yin and Yang Double Dun are born from the great creation of heaven and earth. When the node has not arrived but the talisman has come first, one must employ the method of supernatural overpassing and hour-receiving. If the node is late in arriving and the Strange Stars have not yet come, one must thoroughly comprehend the mystery of overpassing and receiving. When the Four Holds have not yet arrived but the node has come first, the talisman still responds as arranged by this configuration. Though the new node has already interlocked its energy, the palaces of the Four Holds remain yet in embryo. When the Four Holds come first and the node arrives later, one overpasses the use of the original climatic node itself. Sometimes the overpass exceeds a remaining number of days, and therefore the accumulated remainder creates an Intercalary position. Before the Two Solstices there is the Intercalary Strange—at that time, what accumulates and stacks has made it so. The utmost of Yang ended by substance of Yin without surfeit, thus the intercalary positions established by the nodes, to make amends for the remainder number.
Qi Men's Nine Escapes—few people know them; secretly held in the immortal classics, profound and abstruse. Bing uniting with the Life Door dwelling on Ding's position becomes the Heavenly Escape bright with the moon's radiance. Yi uniting with the Open Door positioned over Liu Ji becomes the Earthly Escape, which the sun's essence can screen. Ding together with the Rest Door uniting with Tai Yin becomes the Human Escape, borrowing the star essence to shine in aid. Bing uniting with the Life Door and merged with Nine Heaven becomes the Spiritual Escape, its majestic authority holding command over spirits. Ding uniting with the Rest Door and nearing Nine Earth becomes the Ghostly Escape, where hidden troops can conceal and avoid. Yi uniting with the Rest Door nearing the waters of Kan is exactly the Dragon Escape—the flood dragon gaining clouds and rain. The Xin Instrument uniting with the Life Door approaching Gen is the Tiger Escape—the fierce tiger with abounding spirit clearing the Eight Barrens. At the Tiger Rampant position, encounter Ding and Scenery Door to control it, roaring like wind upon the general's altar. The Dragon's Flight likewise relies on Ding and the Scenery Door, one leap shaking the Thunder Gate, revolving the winged wheel.
Whenever the Bing Strange casts the Life Door, below combined with Liu Ding, offering no violation of the Strange Tomb or Punishment Control, one is screened by the essence of the moon. Within, its numen responds in the heart; without, it governs the body itself. Its qi ascends into the head, and its substance descends and remains fixed in the heart, and it is called "His Viridian Pearl." One who can hear and cultivate may ascend to heaven. Should there be business at such a moment, call out the Jade Maiden's divine name—Ding Mao—and go forth through that door, the spirit protecting and watching over her charge. The mantra says: "Jade Maiden of Ding Mao, guard me and guide me, admitting no specters to injury me; those who gaze at me shall be blinded, and those who loose their villainy upon me will themselves reap that demerited ban." Such devices as should accompany practice render proper the soul's forbearance never recklessly deferred but reserved even against the means given by cautious diligence to take one heed. Thus one marches, ends: on this initiatory instruction those attendant preparations render attainment; conversely the ones awaiting conquest cast aside their stealth. Therefore so — through use this emblem serves perfecting their commission entire at the king and vassal of highest lord through complete completion; from him empowerment proceed blessings conducted future reverence from duty-sequent successor.

When marriage is contemplated, something singular yet complete the circle and mansion lines; toward across line. Still however hence position move through pure favored.
