Chapter 28 of 64
东坡易传
The Great Excess Hexagram (Hexagram 28): Lake over Wind, Great Excess — Dui above, Xun below
"Great Excess": The ridge beam bends. It is favorable to undertake endeavors. There is progress and success.
The Tuan Zhuan says: "Great Excess" means the great ones are excessive. "The ridge beam bends" because both the base and the top are weak. The strong are excessive yet occupy the central positions, acting with compliance and delight, "favorable to undertaking endeavors," and thus there is progress and success.
The second and fifth lines are positions where authority is held and effects are produced. When the yang emerges from within, occupies the position of active governance, and pushes the yin out, it is called "Great Excess" — the greater side has overreached. When the yin enters from without, occupies the position of active governance, and imprisons the yang within, it is called "Small Excess" — the lesser side has overreached. The meaning of "excess" speaks of a state of lopsided dominance and imbalance. Thus "Great Excess" describes an era where the ruler is arrogant and there are no ministers to support him. What the Yijing values is that yang is able to govern yin, not that yang bullies and despises yin. People only know that when yin overwhelms yang it becomes a calamity — how would they know that when yang overwhelms yin, neither does it bring blessing! Yin is established to nourish yang; ministers are established to protect the ruler. When yin declines, yang loses its nourishment; when ministers are weak, the ruler loses his protection. Therefore it is said: "Great Excess — the great ones are excessive. The ridge beam bends because the base and the top are both weak." The four yang lines are the ridge beam; the first and top lines are where the ridge beam rests. Being weak and rejected, they cannot bear the burden entrusted to them — this is why the ridge beam bends. "The ridge beam bends" — we will be crushed. Therefore in an era of "Great Excess," it is favorable to take action and taboo to remain at ease. When the ruler's extravagance has reached its peak and the state has no anxieties, then those above grow ever more arrogant while those below cannot bear it, and disaster is imminent. Thus "favorable to undertaking endeavors" — favorable to undertaking means favorable to taking action. New events bring anxieties; anxieties make one hasten to employ people. When calamity arrives and everyone is urgent, the dynamic between ruler and minister can become somewhat balanced. Therefore it is said: "The strong are excessive yet central, acting with compliance and delight — favorable to undertaking endeavors, and thus there is progress and success."
How great is the significance of the era of "Great Excess"!
The Xiang Zhuan says: The lake waters submerge the trees — this is "Great Excess." The noble person thus stands independent without fear, and withdraws from the world without vexation.
The first yin line is fitting for "without fear," the top line is fitting for "withdrawing from the world."
Initial Six: Using white cogongrass as a cushion. No blame.
The Xiang Zhuan says: "Using white cogongrass as a cushion" — because the yielding one is in a lower position.
"White cogongrass" refers to the initial six. What is cushioned is the second nine. A flimsy thing like cogongrass cannot hold anything precious, yet if one has something extremely treasured, one is certain to use it as a cushion. It is not that one cherishes the cogongrass, but that one cherishes the vessel. As for the initial six in relation to the second nine, the disparity of strength is inherent — the survival or loss of the initial six is insufficient to bring gain or loss to the second nine. Yet the reason the second nine is able to be secure and well-nourished above is precisely because of the cushioning of the initial six. Discard the cogongrass without preserving it, and the vessel will be set upon the bare ground; abandon the initial six without employing it, and the second nine must toil on its own. Thus Confucius said: "Though the cogongrass is a trivial object, its use can be momentous."
Second Nine: The withered poplar sprouts new shoots. An old man obtains a young wife. Nothing is unfavorable.
The Xiang Zhuan says: "Old man" and "young wife" — this is mutual closeness in a time of excess.
Viewed from the whole hexagram, "Great Excess" is an era of an arrogant ruler; but viewed from individual lines, the fifth nine should be the arrogant one, whereas the second nine, being a yang line dwelling in a yin position, is not arrogant. At the peak of prosperity, about to wither, the second nine alone is able to lower itself to accept the initial six in order to assist itself — this is the meaning of "sprouting new shoots." The "old man" refers to the second nine; the "young wife" refers to the initial six. It is the general tendency of human sentiment that when a husband is aged and the wife is young, the wife becomes haughty and the husband deferential. When the wife is haughty and the husband deferential, this means ministers find it hard to be employed while the ruler condescends to the worthies. Thus "nothing is unfavorable." In an era of "Great Excess," the anxiety lies in being lofty with no supportive response. Therefore it is said: "Old man and young wife — excess, and thus they come to each other."
Third Nine: The ridge beam bends. Misfortune.
The Xiang Zhuan says: The "misfortune" of "the ridge beam bending" — because assistance is impossible.
Fourth Nine: The ridge beam rises. Good fortune. If there is another aim, there will be regret.
The Xiang Zhuan says: The "good fortune" of "the ridge beam rising" — because it does not bend downward.
Viewed from the whole hexagram, this is the condition where "base and top are weak" and the ridge beam bends. But viewed from individual lines, the top six should bear responsibility for the "bending of the ridge beam," whereas the initial six, though weak, can stand on its own — because it encounters the second nine and does not bend. The first and top lines are not themselves the ridge beam; they are merely the places where the ridge beam rests. The grounding signs dwell there, while the "rising" and "bending" manifest here. When the initial six does not bend at the bottom, the fourth nine's ridge beam "rises"; when the top six cannot provide mutual support, the third nine's "bending" is because of its correspondence with the top line. The fourth nine, concentrating on its corresponding line, enjoys good fortune; having another aim brings regret. The "rising" of the "ridge beam" is not the blessing of the initial six, yet the fourth nine reaps its benefit. When it comes to "bending," the top six bears no share either, and the third nine assumes the blame. Thus in an era of "Great Excess," the wise hold that yang should bend beneath yin, while the foolish hold that yin should bend beneath yang.
Fifth Nine: The withered poplar blossoms. An old woman obtains a vigorous husband. No blame and no repute.
The Xiang Zhuan says: "The withered poplar blossoms" — how could it last long? "Old woman" and "vigorous man" — this too is a shameful matter.
At the peak of prosperity about to wither, it bursts into blossom, thereby expending itself — its vigor is exhausted and it cannot endure. "Sprouts" refer to regeneration after collapse, a return to the originating state; "blossoms" refer to full blooming from fullness, accelerating towards the end. The fifth nine, being a yang line in a yang position, is extravagant to the extreme, and the top six presides over it. The force of the fifth nine cannot correct this; it merely hastens the disaster. Therefore it is said: "An old woman obtains a vigorous man. No blame, no repute." The "old woman" refers to the top six; the "vigorous man" refers to the fifth nine. When the husband is strong and the wife is aged, this is the sign of the ruler wearying of his ministers. Thus instruction is given for "no blame, no repute," in order to avoid calamity in such an era. "Blame" is what invites loss; "repute" is what invites suspicion.
Top Six: Fording too deeply; the waters submerge the head. Misfortune, but no blame.
The Xiang Zhuan says: The "misfortune" of "fording too deeply" — it cannot be held as fault.
"Fording too deeply" to the point where "the waters submerge the head" — this is the desire to rescue something. The situation cannot be saved, and one suffers the harm in vain — thus misfortune. Yet from the standpoint of righteousness, no blame can be attributed.
The Great Excess Hexagram centers on revealing a state of structural imbalance in crisis — where yang strength has expanded excessively while the yin foundation and tips have become extremely weak. It resembles a building whose ridge beam is robust but whose two supporting pillars are rotten. Su Shi’s distinctive insight is that he does not simply frame "excess" as yang unilaterally suppressing yin — rather, he points out that "lopsided dominance without equilibrium" is the essence of the problem. When yang flourishes excessively and yin declines, yang itself loses the nurturing foundation and protective support — this is a systematic fragility, not a one-sided display of strength.
The imagery of "ridge bending" (dong rao) in the hexagram statement is exquisitely subtle: the ridge itself (the four yang lines) is not weak, but support at both ends (initial six and top six) is too feeble to prevent the entire structure from collapsing. Su Shi therefore extends this into a political dilemma of "an arrogant ruler without ministers": the ruler’s authority is excessive, but the supporting ministers are far too weak — superficially the ruler is unconstrained, yet in reality the entire polity lacks balance and feedback mechanisms, placing it in grave danger.
Viewed through a contemporary lens, the Great Excess hexagram carries intellectual value far beyond ancient politics, mapping onto diverse modern contexts:
Organizational Governance: In an organization where leadership power is heavily concentrated while grassroots execution and feedback mechanisms are weak, a "Great Excess" condition emerges. Leadership looks omnipotent, yet decisions lack sufficient informational support and reliable executive safeguards. Modern management's "information cocoon" theory closely aligns with the hexagram's warning — powerful leaders readily stop hearing the truth, while powerless subordinates lack the space and capacity to express themselves.
Personal Development: When someone becomes excessively prominent in one dimension (e.g., career achievement) while lagging severely in others (health, relationships, emotional support), a "Great Excess" pattern with "weak fundamentals and tops" also forms. In such cases, "favorable to undertaking endeavors" suggests: take the initiative to create "events" — break out of the existing comfort zone, bring underlying risks to the surface, and thus gain the opportunity to readjust.
Economy and Markets: Economic overheating and asset bubbles may be viewed as modern manifestations of "Great Excess." Su Shi's "extreme prosperity will wither" and "blossoms consuming one's own energy" precisely capture the late-stage characteristics of a bubble: surface prosperity (blossoming) is itself the signal of exhausted resources, while genuine recovery demands "sprouting from the roots" — vitality renewed at the foundation level.
Decision-Making Reference: Confronting a "Great Excess" pattern, the core principle is to be "favorable to engagement, but cautious of becoming stagnant." This involves:
Proactive Creation of "Changemaking Events" — not causing trouble for its own sake, but proactively shattering false equilibria. When organizations or individuals are caught in apparent stability that is de facto fragile, deliberate "perturbation" helps expose problems and stimulate vitality. For instance, enterprises can voluntarily restructure rather than wait for crises to force change.
Two Contrasting Stances — "Standing alone without fear" and "withdrawing from the world without vexation": The initial six and top six lines represent distinct responses. The initial six debases itself as the "white cogongrass," taking on a cushioning role, thereby preserving and supporting what must endure; the top six, by contrast, "fords and drowns headlong," knowingly acting against impossibility — a noble but sacrificial mission. The modern equivalent: at times of "Great Excess," one either takes the humble posture of foundational support (noting the value of that role) or boldly bears their assignment with tragic heroism. The gravest error is neither empowering leadership nor undertaking meaningful service.
**Dialectics — "Old man with young wife" vs. "Aged wife with vigorous spouse": This relates to hexagram lines: In lines 9.2 (yang occupies yin, humbling itself to forge an uncertain partnerships) vs. 9.5 (yang doubles yang rigidity, providing forms of harmony but undesirable quality). The former yields "nothing unfavorable," the latter becomes "a shameful matter." Implication: In tightly taut systems, those with advantage should soften their authority resolutely to reconcile with lower positions — genuinely equal alignment. But advancing purely to privilege or dominant place accelerates brittleness in others.

As seen from Nature — "but sway matters share health in degrees".
Behind Su Shi’s reading stands a profound philosophical premise: excess strengthening of one side undercuts precisely everything upon which it depends — endogenously dissolves through reinforcing the opposite dynamics — thereby, sometimes reveals through philosophy’s mirror true recognition. Consider the striking homology with Hegel’s master-slave dialectic: the master’s total control over the slave ironically strips the master of direct competence over the foundational skills of daily life — structural dependence on those dominated remains: their reliance consolidates through deeper shackles, they sustain ruling identity — surplus being contradictory in top closure eventually form closed surplus structures acting limit to master.
That symmetrical insight also makes sense systematically — common pitfalls: maximizing isolated functions at prohibitive interplay, expense weak due balance complexities internally affecting performance gains’ realizability. Four yang lines converge in the middle, while two yin lines dwell apart at either end—this is the structural essence of "Great Excess" (Da Guo): the core is excessively strong, while both the foundation and the extremities are weak. The entire hexagram resembles a piece of timber that is slender at both ends and stout in the middle, which inevitably bends under its load. Su Shi's interpretation seizes upon this structural characteristic and elevates the positional relationships among the lines into a political philosophy: **those who are powerful must actively seek the support of the weak, otherwise their very strength will become the source of their downfall.**
