The Benefit Hexagram (Hexagram 42): Wind and Thunder Benefit, Xun above and Zhen below. 🌬️⚡
Benefit: It is favorable to have somewhere to go, and favorable to cross great rivers and vast currents.
The Commentary on the Judgment says: "Benefit" means reducing the upper to benefit the lower, and the people's joy is boundless. Bestowing grace from above to below—this righteousness is brilliant and great. "It is favorable to have somewhere to go" because one dwells in the center and maintains correctness, bringing good fortune; "it is favorable to cross great rivers" because the way of wood is able to flow freely.
The fourth six diminishes itself to benefit the lower, and the Xun trigram performs its function—nothing is more complete than in the "Benefit" hexagram, hence it is said "the way of wood is able to flow freely." Crossing rivers and traversing streams is precisely the way of using wooden boats.
The "Benefit" hexagram moves with Zhen and complies with Xun, daily advancing with no limit. Heaven bestows and Earth generates, and this benefit has no fixed location.
"Heaven bestows" refers to Qian transforming into Xun; "Earth generates" refers to Kun transforming into Zhen.
In all the principles of "Benefit," one must act in accord with the time and circumstance.
The noble person regards the people as they regard themselves. The key to "Benefit" lies in diminishing oneself, so one must wait for the appropriate "time" and then act.
The Commentary on the Image says: Wind and thunder stir each other—this is the symbol of the "Benefit" hexagram. The noble person comprehends from this: seeing what is good, they move toward it; having faults, they resolutely correct them.
"Restraining anger and blocking selfish desires"—then the self-diminishment of those above carries less burden; correcting faults and moving toward goodness—then the grace received by those below becomes even greater.
The Initial Nine: Favorable for great undertakings. Great good fortune. No blame.
The Commentary on the Image says: "Great good fortune and no blame" is because one dwelling in the lower position does not bear heavy responsibilities.
The lower position of the "Benefit" hexagram is the upper position of the "Diminution" hexagram, therefore understanding the principle of "Diminution" leads to understanding "Benefit." Looked at in reverse, the Initial Nine of "Benefit" is the Top Nine of "Diminution." From the first line upward, this is uniformly the case. It is only because the positions above and below, inner and outer, differ that outward manifestations cannot be without subtle distinctions. When it comes to exhausting the truth of the first line and handling matters with propriety, then "Diminution" and "Benefit" are identical. The Top Nine of "Diminution" and the Initial Nine of "Benefit" are both the proper recipients of benefit. Does the other party diminish themselves specifically to benefit me—could this be to please me? It is to place high hopes on me and hold me to strict demands. I must have corresponding achievements to respond to this expectation, hence the Top Nine of "Diminution" says "favorable to have somewhere to go," and the Initial Nine of "Benefit" says "favorable to undertake great works." When one in a superior position undertakes works, their situation makes it easy to establish merit; with profit, their gains double; with blame, their responsibility is lighter. Thus the Top Nine of "Diminution" merely attains "no blame" and, with steadfastness, good fortune. When one in an inferior position undertakes works, their situation makes it difficult to achieve merit; with profit, the credit goes upward—with blame, they bear the guilt first. Thus the Initial Nine of "Benefit" must reach the realm of "great good fortune" before it can attain "no blame." Why? Because the position of the Initial Nine is inherently not a place of abundant material advantage.
The Second Six: Someone comes to benefit him, presenting a turtle worth ten pairs of cowries. He cannot decline. Maintaining steadfast correctness for a long time brings good fortune. The king uses this sincerity to offer sacrifice to the Supreme God—good fortune.
The Commentary on the Image says: "Someone comes to benefit him"—this is benefit arriving from outside.
The Second Six of "Benefit" is the Fifth Six of "Diminution." The turtle obtained by the Fifth Six is the benefit of the Second Nine "not diminishing himself"; the turtle obtained by the Second Six is the benefit of the Fifth Nine "acting with sincere heart." If the recipient of benefit is a minister, then maintaining "long-term steadfastness" toward the ruler brings good fortune; if the recipient is the ruler, then "offering sacrifice to the Supreme God" brings good fortune—these are people who receive benefit and never forget to repay.
The Third Six: Benefiting him through the means of untoward events—no blame. With sincerity in the heart, walking the middle path, use a jade tablet to make it known to the dukes and feudal lords.
The Commentary on the Image says: Using "untoward events" to benefit—this is an inherent principle.
The Third Six of "Benefit" is the Fourth Six of "Diminution." "Someone comes to benefit" means others come to benefit me; "to benefit him" means I go to benefit others. The Fourth Six benefits the Initial Nine through "healing his affliction"; the Third Six benefits the Top Nine through "untoward events"—the essence is the same. When the noble person encounters perilous circumstances, they wear coarse garments, eat simple food, and display fearful reverence as a way of self-abasement. Although the Top Nine corresponds to the Third Six, if asked to diminish himself to benefit her, he would not be willing. Thus the Third Six, through a reverent and self-effacing attitude, is then able to "steadfastly" "preserve" this benefit. The other party, seeing that the recipient obtains benefit and does not become arrogant, will trust her and come to assist—hence "with sincerity, walking the middle path." In the "Benefit" hexagram, the Second Six occupies the royal position, so the Initial Nine and the Third Six can both serve as dukes. "Informing the duke" means having words to speak to the lord, namely "I have come to benefit you." According to the Book of Rites, the rule for use of the jade tablet is that it is returned once the matter is concluded, so the jade tablet is not for bribery but for expressing trustworthiness. The Top Nine's benefit to the Third Six relies on faith alone—it is not actually giving any physical thing; the Third Six likewise simply partakes of this trust without claiming material substance—thus the Top Nine gladly benefits her.
The Fourth Six: Walking the middle path, informing the duke and gaining his compliance. It is favorable to rely on this to move the capital and stabilize the people.
The Commentary on the Image says: "Informing the duke and his compliance"—this is because one's will is directed toward benefiting.
The Fourth Six of "Benefit" is the Third Six of "Diminution"—both are those who personally practice the way of "Benefit." The Fourth Six "walks the middle path" to benefit the Initial Nine—how could it be merely communication with jade tablets as in the case of the Top Nine? Not only does she inform him; she personally follows to act with him. Those who can diminish themselves to follow others are people whose will is directed toward "benefiting." The Initial Nine was originally a yin position, and the Fourth Six was originally a yang position, and they exchange—thus the Initial Nine is "moving the capital," and the Fourth Six self-diminishes while the Initial Nine receives her benefit. The Initial Nine's migration is financed by the Fourth Six, so the Initial Nine "finds it favorable"—relying on the Fourth Six to migrate.
The Fifth Nine: With sincerity in the heart bestowing grace upon the people, no divination is needed — great good fortune. With sincerity, the people are also touched by my virtue.
The Fifth Nine of "Benefit" is the Second Nine of "Diminution." To confer grace with sincerity is to give without exhaustion of resources. The Second Nine assists him through benefit gained "without diminishing oneself," while the Fifth Nine bestows through grace that does not deplete anything—the essence is the same. Does grace that does not deplete still need to select its recipients? Hence "no divination—great good fortune." I trust the Second Nine, so the Second Nine also trusts me; I hold gratitude for the Second Nine's virtue, so the Second Nine also feels gratitude for mine. "With sincerity, he benefits my virtue"—this is the return of "long-lasting steadfastness."
The Commentary on the Image says: "With sincerity in the heart bestowing grace," there is no need for divination; "he benefits my virtue"—this greatly fulfills the aspirations.
"What is greatly attained" refers to the aspiration of the Second Six.
The Top Nine: No one comes to benefit him, and some even strike him. His resolve cannot endure, bringing misfortune.
The Commentary on the Image says: "No one comes to benefit him"—this is a one-sided utterance; "someone strikes him"—this is a blow arriving from outside.
The Top Nine of "Benefit" is the Initial Nine of "Diminution." Both are those unwilling to benefit others, hence the Initial Nine of "Diminution" must speak of "healing his affliction" and "through untoward events" before benefit can be realized.
The Initial Nine is in a lowly position where circumstances compel him, so "as soon as the matter concludes, he hastens away"; the Top Nine's choice to benefit or not lies entirely with himself. Moreover, diminishing the upper to benefit the lower is what the noble person delights in and what the petty person resents. Therefore at the Top Nine, specific warning is given through the misfortune arising from "no one benefits" and "lack of constancy." "No one comes to benefit him" does not mean there is no way to benefit—it means that I stubbornly declare "I will not benefit him"; "not being constant" does not mean one cannot endure—it means I stubbornly declare "I will not be constant."
"Mo" and "wu"—these are the utterances of someone one-sided and lacking broad-mindedness. All people within the hexagram benefit the lower—this is what is called the "constant," and I alone stubbornly cling to such a mindset—then the danger of "inconstancy" naturally arrives. The Top Nine occupies a position towering alone, which is the target of resentment for those below; those below do not dare strike him because they fear he has allies. Not benefiting others means no allies. Confucius said: "No interaction yet demanding things—the people will not heed. No one assists—then those who harm you arrive." Hence "someone strikes him." The Top Nine invites the blow just as the Second Six invites the benefit. As long as one holds such a mindset inside, external things will naturally respond correspondingly, hence the word "huo" (someone). "Certain people" refers to what comes from outside that one does not know oneself.
