Hexagram Image: Water (Kan) above, Fire (Li) below · Water and Fire in Harmony
Hexagram Text: Jiji (Completion), smooth progress for the small ones; favorable for maintaining correctness. Initially auspicious, but ultimately there will be disorder.
The Tuan Zhuan says: "Jiji, smooth for the small ones," means the meaning of smoothness.
When yin and yang are each content in their positions, they become still and without function. If their function is to be exerted, there must be something that accumulates and stores it. Water is above fire; fire wishes to rise but cannot reach through—this is precisely how fire nurtures its latent anger. The yin lines all ride above the yang lines; yang wishes to advance but cannot achieve its desire—this is precisely how yang stimulates its strength. When fire stirs its anger, though there be obstacles, it will eventually break through; when yang rouses its strength, though there be difficulties, it will eventually accomplish its aim: this is how "Jiji" comes to be. Therefore it is said: "Jiji, smooth for the small ones is smoothness." This means: the small ones (the yielding forces) all occupy the upper positions and flourish; the great ones (the firm forces) all occupy the lower positions and are blocked.
"Favorable for correctness" is because the firm and yielding each attain their proper alignment, and their positions are appropriate.
Kan is above and Li is below; the firm and yielding each maintain their proper orientation; yin all occupies yin positions, yang all occupies yang positions—thus the positions are appropriate. "The firm and yielding are correct and their positions are appropriate," then the small ones may advance no further, and it is favorable to abide in correctness.
"Initially auspicious" is because the yielding line attains the central position of the lower trigram; "termination" then brings "disorder" because its path has been exhausted.
The yielding lines all ride atop the firm lines, which is not the proper way; used in the course of "crossing over" it is acceptable, but once "Completion" is achieved, transformation is required to return to the proper path—this serves as the conclusion. If one stops and does not change, disorder will arise.
The Xiang Zhuan says: Water above fire is the image of "Jiji"; the superior person thus ponders misfortune in advance and makes preparation.
"Jiji" is the age of difficulties pacified and settled, where troubles often originate.
Initial Nine: Dragging the wheel with force, wetting the tail; no fault.
The Xiang Zhuan says: "Dragging the wheel with force," follows principle and is naturally "without fault."
The matter of "crossing" always proceeds from within to without, hence both "Jiji" and "Weiji" treat the initial line as the tail and the top line as the head. "To drag" is the image of wishing to act but not yet advancing. The Initial Nine is just now advancing amidst danger, having not yet completed the crossing; therefore there is "no fault."
Interpretation: The Initial Nine is at the beginning of Completion, like the first step in fording a stream: the wheel is dragged and the tail is wet, movement is slowed, yet because one has not yet penetrated into peril, cautious delay ironically brings no error. 🌱

The Xiang Zhuan says: "Recovered on the seventh day," comes from upholding the central way.
In times of peace and prosperity, people do not contemplate unrest, yet petty individuals initiate seeds of trouble. The initiation of trouble must have a beginning; it must begin with contention; contention gives rise to agitation, from agitation to indiscriminate spread. The superior person composes himself with ultimate stillness and embraces all with a generous heart. Though there are those who delight in chaos and take joy in calamities, if no one responds to them, then they swiftly fall into ruin without exception. In the Jiji hexagram, every line has a response counterpart; Sixth Two and Sixth Four lie squeezed between two yang lines, at a presumable point of jeopardy, being targets of hostile design; yet Sixth Two occupies the central position and is correct, being the proper consort of the Fifth (Nine). Someone wishes to estrange them, thus stealing her "screen." The "screen" (fei) is an ornament of concealment used by women; when a woman loses her screen, her husband will certainly grow angry and seek it; seeking does not guarantee attainment, but the woman is first grounds for suspicion. Whoever finds proximity to her (prompt approach) is held responsible before others, mutual resentment springs furious, and woe from our unwary negligence meets. Hence untold troubles arise; each thing obscures is my "concern.".
