Hexagram 43 (Guài): Lake over Heaven, Dui above Qian 🌊⛰
"Guài": Proclaim openly in the royal court, call out with sincerity, and there is danger; announce it from your own city, it is not favorable to resort directly to military force; it is favorable to have somewhere to go.
The Tuan Zhuan says: "Guài" means resolution, the firm resolves the weak. Firm yet joyous, resolute yet harmonious. "Proclaim at the royal court" means the yin line rides above the five yang lines; "call out with sincerity, and there is danger" means that although perilous, it is done openly.
Five yang and one yin—the yin is extremely weak and solitary, yet it rides above all the yang lines because it has found a place of attachment. What Upper Six attaches to is precisely the yang firmness of Nine in the Fifth, which is the so-called "king." To resolve Upper Six, one must openly denounce it at the royal court, which shows there are inconveniences in the situation. Thus the five yang, though trusting one another, do not forget vigilance, and recognize that there is a path of danger. "Call out" is used to give warning. Knowing danger amid strength is what makes it "open and bright."
"Announce it from your own city; it is not favorable to resort directly to military force" means that what is honored (military force) will lead to exhaustion.
"City" refers to where the people dwell. When dealing with a petty person, one must first win the support of the people; once the petty person loses the people, they lose their foundation of standing. "Military" refers to Upper Six. The strength of the five yang is more than sufficient to directly attack Upper Six, yet they do not attack directly—this is precisely why they will not become exhausted. One who thinks oneself insufficient, though weak, will have surplus strength; one who thinks oneself sufficient, though strong, will reach a limit. Therefore "what is honored" (direct force) is exactly the cause of exhaustion.
"It is favorable to have somewhere to go" means the growth of yang firmness will ultimately be completed.
When yang firmness is full, one worries about overflow; when it overflows, one worries about toppling. Therefore "it is favorable to have somewhere to go." Going means there is application and use—this is to prevent yang firmness from becoming overly full.
The Xiang Zhuan says: Lake water resides above heaven—this is "Guài"; the superior person therefore bestows emoluments to those below, but if one dwells in virtue and accomplishments, there will be resentment.
The superior person, regarding emoluments and benefits, wishes them to belong to others; regarding virtue and accomplishments, wishes them to belong to oneself. Confucius said: "Cultivate one's person and establish one's words to fix one's sincerity"—this is precisely to dwell securely in accomplishments. "Lake above heaven"—this position cannot be long maintained, so the superior person "bestows emoluments" and does not "dwell in virtue."
Initial Nine: Strong in the front toes; if one goes forward and does not prevail, it is a fault.
The Xiang Zhuan says: Not prevalling yet "going forward"—this is the fault.
"Dazhuang" develops into "Guài," so the Initial Nine of Guài is no different from the Initial Nine of Dazhuang. Dazhuang's Initial Nine says: "Strong in the toes." And Guài's Initial Nine says: "Strong in the front toes." Both contain the image of the ram, appearing at the line that exercises strength—thus we know they are no different. Saying "front" borrows the expression from Dazhuang; it must borrow Dazhuang's expression to show that what is "strong" is the same, but what is encountered is different. Dazhuang's Initial Nine exercises strength toward "Zhen"; Zhen is my friend, and touching encounters a friend, therefore it can break through the hedge and advance, achieving something. Guài's Initial Nine exercises strength toward "Dui"; Dui is not my friend. If one cannot prevail, then going forward will be held back—how can one break through the hedge and advance! The superior person's action only goes when victory is seen, so victory precedes the going; going when victory is not guaranteed is naturally "a fault."
Nine in the Second: Vigilant and calling out, late at night; there is armed conflict, do not worry.
The Xiang Zhuan says: "There is armed conflict, do not worry" — this is attaining the mean.
"Armed conflict" refers to Upper Six. "Vigilant and calling out, late at night" means vigilance. "There is armed conflict, do not worry" means calmness. Being calm without forgetting vigilance, being vigilant without resorting to force—this is "attaining the mean." This is the same as Dazhuang's Nine in the Second "auspicious through perseverance," so both are praised for "attaining the mean."
Nine in the Third: Strong in the cheekbones—there is misfortune; the superior person, thoroughly resolute, walks alone; encounters rain and gets drenched; there is vexation, but no fault.
The Xiang Zhuan says: "The superior person, thoroughly resolute," ultimately has no fault.
Initial Nine is the toes, so Nine in the Third is the cheekbones. Living with petty people while one's strength is displayed on one's countenance—this is the path of misfortune. In the Yijing, whenever the reiterative-superlative meaning is used, the term is repeated, as in "Qian Qian" (dry-dry), "Qian Qian" (modest-modest), "Jian Jian" (difficult-difficult), and so forth. The reason Nine in the Third displays strength on the face is to avoid the suspicion of partiality toward its counterpart (Upper Six). Therefore it is told that this is not so: the superior person of Nine in the Third, residing with yang at the yang position, is the most thoroughly resolute—why should there be suspicion of partiality toward its counterpart! If one abandons one's clique and walks alone to respond to one's counterpart, causing Upper Six's yin softness to become harmonious and transform into rain, to the point of being "drenched," though there may be those who "vex" without knowing my heart, ultimately there will certainly be no fault.
Nine in the Fourth: The buttocks have no skin, the going is halting and hesitant; if one pulls along the ram, regret vanishes; hearing the words, yet not believing.
The Xiang Zhuan says: "The going is halting and hesitant"—the position is improper; "hearing the words, yet not believing"—it is not that one is intelligent.
Upper Six is what Nine in the Fourth calls the "buttocks." Hexagram 47 (Kun), Six in the Third "rests on thorny brambles," so Initial Six "the buttocks are trapped in a dead tree trunk." In Guài, Upper Six is being resolved, so Nine in the Fourth has "buttocks without skin"—both are speaking of the end line of the same body (the upper trigram Dui) as the "buttocks." Dwelling with the assembled yang while the same-body line is being resolved, the "going is halting and hesitant" and uneasy. "Ram" refers to Initial Nine; Initial Nine coming to butt is my regret; being able to restrain it causes "regret to vanish." Though one can dispel regret, one's understanding is not fully penetrated—how can this compare to Dazhuang's Nine in the Fourth? That line, while dispelling regret, also obtains a strong vehicle! The superior person is only one who can dissolve resentment and accept worthy persons; thus those who serve as one's intelligence are numerous—that is Dazhuang's Nine in the Fourth. Now when Initial Nine comes to butt against me, I restrain and bind it, refusing to release it—then those who fear will grow manifold. Though to that person's left and right, front and back, there will be nothing not suspicious, therefore "hearing the words" yet not believing.
Nine in the Fifth: Thoroughly resolute toward the purslane; traveling the middle path, no fault.
The Xiang Zhuan says: "Traveling the middle path, no fault"—because the middle path is not yet fully illuminated.
Upper Six is not worth great "resolution," like the "purslane" (a fragile herbaceous plant). Nine in the Fifth, residing with yang at the yang position, is the most thoroughly resolute; toward that which does not merit great resolution, it exhausts the force of resolution. Though dwelling in the middle, it has not yet illuminated greatly, so "traveling the middle path, no fault." "Traveling the middle path" means in contrast staying with the four yang lines and releasing Upper Six. This is equivalent to that which shares the same trigram (Nine in the Fourth); however, it does not reach "halting and uncertain"—because its yang firmness is complete. One whose yang firmness is whole is not grieved when the same body suffers harm, so Nine in the Fourth's Xiang Zhuan considers it "position improper."
Top Six: Without calling out—ultimately there is misfortune.
The Xiang Zhuan says: The misfortune of "without calling out" is that it ultimately cannot last long.
"Without calling out" means without vigilance. If yang is not vigilant against me, then I might have an opportunity to exploit it; nevertheless, ultimately there will certainly be misfortune.
Hexagram Guài reveals the methodology when yang firmness resolves yin softness: the way of resolution lies not in the suppression by force, but in openness and transparency, winning popular support, sustained vigilance, and acting in due measure. Five yang resolving one yin appears overwhelmingly strong, yet Su Shi points out that "one who thinks oneself sufficient, though strong, will reach a limit"—true power lies in not abusing power.
