The Pi Hexagram (Twelfth Hexagram) ☰☷ Qian (Heaven) above, Kun (Earth) below
The way of "Pi" (Obstruction) is not the righteous way for humanity; it is not conducive for the junzi (the noble person) to remain steadfast. The great and strong goes outward, while the soft and small comes inward.
The Tuan Zhuan says: "'Pi's' unrighteousness, not conducive for the junzi to remain steadfast; the great goes, the small comes" – this speaks of Heaven and Earth not commingling, so the myriad things cannot flourish; the superior and inferior not commingling, so the world cannot become a state. Within is Yin, without is Yang; within is softness, without is hardness; within are petty people, without are junzi. The way of the petty person grows; the way of the junzi diminishes.
The Spring and Autumn Annals says: "If there were no junzi, could it still be called a state?" When the way of the junzi has receded, even if there is a state, it is the same as having none.
The Xiang Zhuan says: Heaven and Earth do not commingle – this is the image of "Pi." The junzi should cultivate frugality and virtue to avoid calamity, and should not pursue glory and emolument.
Pulling up the thatch grass, the roots are interconnected, because its kind gather together; adhering to what is right brings good fortune and success.
The Xiang Zhuan says: "Pulling up the thatch," "perseverance brings good fortune," – the aim is upon the ruler.
Going from "Tai" (Prosperity) to "Pi" is easy; going from "Pi" back to "Tai" is difficult. Why? After Yin and Yang exchange positions, there is none that does not wish to recover, and once recovered, there is none that is not content in its position. Therefore, "Tai" has "zheng" (advancement), while "Pi" has no "zheng." If indeed there is no "zheng," then ultimately there would never be "Tai" – is that acceptable? Therefore, Kun resides in the inner position without forgetting to remain steadfast toward Qian – this is the gradual beginning of "Tai," hence "progress."
Embracing compliance and following along – this is auspicious for the petty person; the great person remains blocked and closed off, but ultimately finds passage.
The Xiang Zhuan says: "The great person is obstructed but prospers," – this speaks of not allowing the groups to become intermingled.
The Yin line occupies its rightful position, wishing to embrace the multitude of Yang, but does so through being submissive and accommodating. The superior delights in this compliance without recognizing its harm – this is the petty person's good fortune. The great person wishes to rescue the age from its troubles. But if they come forward to contend, the ruler above will not trust them, and those below will be resented by the petty people. Therefore, it is better to withdraw and remain obstructed. When the great person retreats and refuses, the groups of the junzi and the petty people never become confused with each other. To think that evil can overcome good often happens in times of intermingling and indeterminacy; but when groups are distinguished and kinds are separated, what is upright has never failed to prevail – hence "progress."
Embracing shame.
The Xiang Zhuan says: "Embracing shame," – because the position is improper.
The third position is originally Yang, so it encompasses the multitudes of Yang while being aware of the shame.
There is the decree of Heaven; no fault – the same category shares in happiness.
The Xiang Zhuan says: "There is the mandate, no blame," – the aim is put into practice.
The junzi resides in the condition of "Pi"; his concern is not being able to realize his purpose. The Initial Six has its aspiration fixed on the ruler, and the Nine in the Fourth responds to it; if there is a mandate from Heaven, then I need not be blamed. Thus the kindred of the junzi obtain his blessings. "Chou" means kind or category.
Resting the obstruction; the great person has good fortune. Beware of peril – "it threatens to fall, it threatens to fall" – but bind it fast to the firm-rooted mulberry.
The Xiang Zhuan says: "The great person's" good fortune – because the position is proper.
Nine in the Fifth: the great person obtains the proper position, appearing extremely stable and strong. Yet real control resides internally. If one relies on the position of stability and strength to contend with the petty people for victory, that will not do. Therefore it says: "Resting the obstruction, the great person has good fortune." Relying on one's stable and strong position, without guarding against the petty people gaining control from within, also will not do. Therefore it says: "It threatens to fall, it threatens to fall – but bind it to the mulberry." "Resting the obstruction" – this is what is meant by "the great person is obstructed" – the petty people do not contend with us as enemies; this is quite clear. The petty people only have their chance for momentary victory when we are in a rush; their advantage lies in urgency, not in forbearance. If one withdraws and does not compete, but rests and lets things quiet down, then those who seemingly cannot contend with us will reveal themselves – hence the great person's good fortune.
Overturning the obstruction; first there is obstruction, afterwards there is joy.
The Xiang Zhuan says: When obstruction reaches its end, it will inevitably tilt over – how could it last long?
"Pi" having reached this point can no longer be maintained through gradualness. Unless there is complete overturning and sweeping removal, joy will not arrive by itself.
