Bo Hexagram (No. 23): Mountain over Earth — Peeling, Gèn above Kūn below ⛰️🌏
Hexagram statement: Bo (Peeling) — it is not favorable to have somewhere to go.
The Tuan Zhuan says: Peeling means to strip away and erode. The yin forces gradually transform the yang. "Not favorable to have somewhere to go" is because the power of petty people is growing. To comply with circumstances and then halt is the wisdom derived from observing the hexagram image. Perceive the opportune time and then act. The noble person honors the order of waxing and waning, fullness and emptiness, and changes therein — this truly is the way of Heaven's movement. 🌱
The Xiang Zhuan says: The mountain rests upon the earth — this is the image of Bo. Those in high positions should treat those below generously, thereby solidifying their foundation. When one is at ease and the people remain close, the peeling force naturally declines on its own without the need for direct confrontation. 🏔️
Initial Six: The peeling erodes the bed beginning with its legs — the correct path is regarded with contempt; maintaining integrity guards against danger. The Xiang Zhuan says: "Peeling the bed from the legs" — destruction begins from the very bottom.
Six in the Second Place: The peeling has reached the point between the bed frame and the legs (the position of "bian"), the correct path is scorned; maintaining integrity guards against danger. The Xiang Zhuan says: "Peeling the bed at the juncture," because there is still no kindred responding response.
The yang lines rest above, so the noble person represents himself by the top three lines. What carries one is the bed, thus that which is below constitutes "the bed." The growth of yin force resembles water overflowing its brim, therefore it is called "contempt." "Bian" is the part above the feet, located between the bed frame and the legs — thus it is called "the juncture." The noble person does not resent the petty person for sin as great as a mountain, yet delights in even the smallest sliver of goodness within him. "Peeling the bed from the legs" — the erosion has already extended to the juncture — yet it is still not directly pronounced as inauspicious; it becomes inauspicious only after [the words] "contempt, integrity" appear. When the petty person fully erases all goodness toward the correct path without any trace remaining, only then does danger become inevitable; if even a remnant of good remains, the noble person may begin from that remnant to win them over gently. Therefore it says: "Peeling the bed at the juncture, as there is still no counterpart." When petty people do evil, they gain confidence and act decisively after someone echoes them. Precisely when there is no one of their kind responding yet — that is the moment when they remain ashamed within and have not yet committed decisively to evil.
Six in the Third Place: Within the peeling situation, there is no blame. The Xiang Zhuan says: "Being without blame in the peeling" is because it separates from the yin lines above and below.
Wang Bi said: "The crowd yin peels away the yang — only this one assists the yang. Though situated in the midst of the peeling, it may remain without blame." Above and below there are two yin lines each (Initial Six and Six in the Second are below; Six in the Fourth and Six in the Fifth are above); responding to the yang forces it to lose the recognition of the fellow yin lines above and below.
Six in the Fourth Place: The peeling has reached the skin (the body) — danger. The Xiang Zhuan says: "Peeling the bed to the skin" — the disaster now strikes close.
The peeling has reached the skin and begins to involve one's very self. Even if one wishes to employ leniency, it is no longer possible, therefore it directly says "danger." ⚠️
Six in the Fifth Place: Piercing through the fish (leading the shoal of yin lines), receiving favor as a palace woman — nothing that is not beneficial. The Xiang Zhuan says: "Receiving favor as a palace woman" — in the end there is no fault.
The era of Guan almost approached that of Bo, yet the hexagram statement does not concern petty people because its ruling line is yang. Six in the Fifth is the governing line of the Bo hexagram; all those who peel away at the yang belong to this kind. The sage cannot prevent them from finding favor with their own kind, so he chooses the one with the least harm to acknowledge. Below the Fourth line is the image of the "string of fish." From the top down, favor is granted with even measure. When favor is divided equally, then force is dispersed; when force is dispersed, harm is shallower. To grant them favor as with palace women prevents them from featuring in governmental affairs. Not featuring in government — this is not only securing one's own peace but granting them peace in return, therefore "nothing is not beneficial." The sage teaches people toward tolerance of accidental faults and their removal of the exceedingly inappropriate; hopefully then they comply. Were required of them absolute blamelessness, their noncompliance would alone remain. 🐟
Top Nine: The abundant fruit is not consumed; the noble person obtains the carriage (the people's support), while the petty person strips away his own hut. The Xiang Zhuan says: "The noble person obtains the carriage," carried by the people; "the petty person strips the hut," in the end, such a one can never be relied upon.
Fruit — none exists without being consumed; but abundant yet unconsumed surely means that it is not fit for consumption. The wise leaves it; the foolish clings to it. The Top Nine had long since lost the people's hearts — the force of five yin lines suffices to crush and seize [his place] — yet the Top Nine lingers uniquely there above: merely keeping one's self for purposes of title. Cooperate and it survives; reveal no cooperation and it dies. The noble person considers this unconsumable fruit and hastens to depart from it. When one is empowered above, one would surely swallow those below; so the noble person then departs from what lies above and moves toward what stands below — there obtaining the people. Resting upon the lower is called the "carriage"; grant cover from above is called the "hut." The "hut" is the remnant of stripping — of what further use could it be! 🚗
