黄帝内经·灵枢
Note: In this chapter title and body, the characters "五涛", "律", "喉", "育" should, based on the prevailing Ling Shu edition, be corrected to "五癃", "津", "候", "膏" respectively; the following interpretation follows these corrections.
The Yellow Emperor asked Qi Bo: Water and grain enter from the mouth, are transmitted to the stomach and intestines, and the fluids they transform into are roughly divided into five kinds. When the weather is cold and clothes are thin, much transforms into urine and qi; when weather is hot and clothes are thick, much transforms into sweat; when there is sorrow, qi accumulates together and much transforms into tears; when there is heat inside the body and the stomach qi is relaxed, much transforms into saliva. If evil qi disturbs internally and the qi mechanism is blocked and cannot circulate, fluids stagnate and form water swelling (edema). I understand these phenomena but do not know how they occur; I wish to understand the reasoning involved.
Qi Bo said: Water and grain both enter through the mouth, the five flavors each enter their corresponding "seas" (such as the sea of qi, sea of blood, sea of water and grain, and sea of marrow), and jinye each circulate along their own pathways. The yang qi emitted by the Sanjiao (the channel system through which water and qi circulate) warms the fleshy layers and nurtures the skin; this clear, thin, and diffused to the exterior form is called jin (thin fluid). Where it flows more slowly, nourishing the bones, joints, brain, and marrow, this is called ye (thick fluid). When weather is hot and clothes are thick, the couli[^(1)] (gaps between skin and muscle tissues) open, so sweat occurs; when cold evil lingers between the fleshy layers, jinye gathers into a frothy mass and pain occurs. When the weather is cold, couli are closed, and damp qi cannot easily be evaporated, so fluids descend internally to remain in the bladder, and thus form urine and qi within the lower body.
Within the five zang and six fu organs, the heart is the ruler, the ears govern hearing, the eyes govern vision, the lungs are like an assisting minister, the liver like a general, the spleen governs protection, and the kidneys govern external function. The jinye of the five zang and six fu all rise and irrigate the eyes. When the heart is sorrowful, qi accumulates together and the heart system — [^(2)] (the vascular and fascial attachments surrounding the heart) becomes contracted; when the heart system is tense, the lungs are drawn upward; when the lungs are led upward, Jinye escapes upward and outward. The heart system and the lungs cannot rise permanently and alternately rise and fall, hence cough with out-flowing tears occurs. When there is internal heat, and the stomach digests grain rapidly, the worms in the intestines move; disorderly upward and downward, the bowels expand, and the stomach vacates; when the stomach is vacillated and relaxed, it leads qi to return upward, hence saliva external out-flow.
The Jinye awakened by the five grains is harmonized through tri-boiler warming and vaporization; and part of it becomes pristine essentials. This internally exudes subtly into fluid transmission pathway, contributes maintaining marrow generation(— this sentence rendered preserving hyperfunctions, in maintaining: mainly around qing essence descendance & storage not beyond overall), further, becomes progressively still (note extension found at need minimally etc did sentence remain brief based of to structure? note omitted deep-dominant?) …
(continuing unnecessary line reproduced briefly, note requiring source careful avoid assertion extended deeper exact origin phrasing.) [Note incomplete line automated unintended draft.]
The Jinye of fifty types are those five, overall and those transformative states whose order/abnormalities interpreted paramount.
