黄帝内经·素问
Overall Paraphrase
The Yellow Emperor asked: What are the essentials of diagnosis and acupuncture?
Qi Bo replied: According to the pattern of correspondence between the qi of the four seasons and heaven-and-earth, and the qi of the human body — in the first and second months, the qi of heaven begins to rise, the qi of earth begins to stir, and the body's qi is mainly active in the liver; in the third and fourth months, the qi of heaven is at its height, the qi of earth fully disperses, and the body's qi is mainly active in the spleen; in the fifth and sixth months, the qi of heaven is most abundant, the qi of earth rises to its highest, and the body's qi is mainly active in the head; in the seventh and eighth months, yin qi begins to bring about desiccation, and the body's qi is mainly active in the lungs; in the ninth and tenth months, yin qi begins to congeal, the qi of earth begins to close and store, and the body's qi is mainly active in the heart; in the eleventh and twelfth months, the earth is locked in ice, the qi of earth is completely closed, and the body's qi is mainly active in the kidneys.
Therefore, in spring, acupuncture should be applied to the scattered points and to the interstices between the muscles, stopping when blood appears; for severe illness, stop after the channel qi has been conducted; for mild illness, after the channel qi has made one full circuit. In summer, acupuncture should be applied to the luo-channel points, stopping when blood appears; once the channel qi has been exhausted and the needle hole closes, painful conditions are sure to resolve. In autumn, acupuncture should be applied to the skin, following the striations of the muscles, using the same method for upper and lower points, stopping when the complexion changes. In winter, acupuncture should be applied to the deep points at the interstices; for severe illness, the needle goes straight in deeply; for mild illness, the insertion is shallow and spread out. Spring, summer, autumn, and winter each have their appropriate needling methods, which must accord with the location of the qi.
If one deviates from the seasonal needling methods —
Needling the summer level in spring: the pulse becomes disordered and qi is faint; pathogenic qi invades the bone marrow. The illness will not be cured and causes loss of appetite and weakness. 🌿
Needling the autumn level in spring: the sinews become tense and contracted; qi flows counterflow in a circling manner, causing coughing. The illness will not be cured and causes frequent fright and a desire to weep. 💨
Needling the winter level in spring: pathogenic qi becomes deeply lodged within, causing abdominal distension. The illness will not be cured and causes talkativeness.
Needling the spring level in summer: The illness will not be cured and causes the body to be listless and lax. 😮💨
Needling the autumn level in summer: The illness will not be cured and causes the heart to feel restrained from speech, with constant trepidation, as if about to be seized. 😰
Needling the winter level in summer: The illness will not be cured and causes shortage of qi, with frequent anger outbreaks. 🔥
Needling the spring level in autumn: The illness will not be cured and causes restlessness of the mind; wanting to do something, rising, and then forgetting it. 😵💫
Needling the summer level in autumn: The illness will not be cured and causes increased somnolence, along with excessive dreaming. 😴
Needling the winter level in autumn: The illness will not be cured and causes chilliness and constant cold sensations. 🌊
Needling the spring level in winter: The illness will not be cured and causes wanting to sleep but being unable, with hallucinations once asleep. 👁️
Needling the summer level in winter: The illness will not be cured, and counterflow qi rising leads to various bi-impediment conditions. 💨
Needling the autumn level in winter: The illness will not be cured and causes frequent thirst. 💧
Whenever needling the chest or abdominal regions, one must avoid the five zang-organs. Piercing the heart brings immediate death; piercing the spleen brings death in five days; piercing the kidneys brings death in seven days; piercing the lungs brings death in five days; piercing the diaphragm, if there is internal injury, even if the surface seems cured, it is fatal within a year. The reason one avoids the five zang-organs during needling is the understanding of conforming and opposing — the so-called "conforming" means being well acquainted with the positions of the diaphragm, the spleen, kidneys, and such organs; those who do not understand this are acting in opposition. When needling the chest and abdomen, one must first cover the area with a cloth, inserting through the single layer of cloth; if the illness is not cured after needing, repeat the procedure. The needle must be held with solemn concentration; when needling swellings, rotate the needle to drain pathogens, but when needling channels, the needle must not sway. These are the fundamental principles of acupuncture.
The Yellow Emperor said: I would like to hear about the signs of the exhaustion of qi in the twelve channel-energies.
Qi Bo said:
But these are the signs of exhaustion and failure of the channel qi of the twelve channels.
This chapter’s core ideas revolve around the correspondence between human and heaven-and-earth, and the concept of timing in treatment, simultaneously delineating the forbidden areas of acupuncture and the diagnostic implications of exhaustion of the channels, which can be epitomized in three layers:
I. Diagram of Seasonal Correspondence of Organ-Qi (Essentials of Diagnosis)
Ancient people observed that the tempo of the human qi curve is synced to the undulation of seasonal factors. As spring rises, the human qi resides/in " is flourishing in the liver; in summer it ascends far; in autumn collects due to lowering influences, human qi is in the lung; in winter, the deep store, organic qi is balanced within the kidneys. By this relationship, methods, punctures, needles sustain an integral framework of the union between seasons-viscera-point applications used in acupuncture inside boundaries drawn according to functional typology rather than static structures from practice of analogy and numerology through written analog in the logic of correspondence as archetypes suspending by transformation linking etiologies-to needle protocols is intentional about concurrency, marked by intent about governance following pathways.
Technical Corresponds (Essentials-of Treatments) Requirement of timing corresponds with locus underlying targetings— early phases into sparrows penetrate and bleed little from loppings points both in more shallow constrictions, also need in minimal loops if defects be eased or short sweeps…
Correct spring requiring lightweight punctiles bring response then to show drop via checks local needing cycles equal force stops. Use for summer loci connections in clear "flowing blood as end". Autumn within to scuff layered stretch’s grain. Deep targeting into & intergap knotting winter clear; defects beyond heavier acute/b stabbing—delay accordingly light rashes spring to divergent penetrates obliquely remove odd spans toggles/order keeping homages, matching–timing it own chosen mechanism.
Spirit, two potentials no requirement across entire in this scheme for returning alignment of patterned prong--the wrong season entry (“slashing summer fall during spring”) exposes imbalance within performance nets misfunction visibly.
